C100: C100 Z-Finder Pro: Great, with a slight modification

I wanted to hate the Z-Finder Pro. I'm not sure why, maybe because I resent paying upwards of $350 for something made of plastic with not many moving parts. I also resent having to use a loupe for a camera that was supposed to be a big improvement over using a DSLR for video, and in most every other way, it is. But I saw Philip Bloom's review of the C100, and of course I like Philip, and he found it indispensable.

Up til now, I've been using a SmallHD DP4 with the EVF attachment, all hanging off an Edelkrone monitor mount in the front cold shoe of the camera handle. With the addition of an E6 battery or two, this is a really heavy setup for a viewfinder. OK for tripod work, but hell for handheld, which is kind of the point for me. Anyway, I have a 7" monitor for when I'm on sticks, so I really wanted the Z-Finder to work for lightweight handheld work, perhaps with no handle and just a Rhode VideoMic plugged into the 1/8" port.

The one thing I didn't like about how the Z-Finder looked was that it seemed like it wanted to default to sticking straight out of the back of the camera, which means holding the thing up and out away from your body, which tires you out and is hard on your back. I prefer to have the viewfinder more at a 45 degree angle, looking kinda down into it, having the camera a bit lower and bracing against my body with my elbows tucked in. I couldn't tell how well it would do this.

So, anyway, when I took it out of the box, I took one look at those 2 "Z-bands" designed to hold the thing in position when mounted on the camera, and frowned. Sure enough, one snapped immediately upon installation. I called Zacuto and they said, yeah, those first bands are bad, we'll send you some new ones. Fair enough. I slid it on the LCD and as I anticipated, I needed the extra spacers because I'm farsighted. So I snapped those on, carefully stretched the remaining Z-band to hook into the top right corner, and dialed in the diopter.

My first impression was, wow, I sure prefer how this looks to the DP4EVF. The Canon screen is just sharper, brighter, much easier to focus. The first thing I did was turn off peaking, because I just don't think I'm going to need it with this thing. So far so good. Did the single band hold the assembly where I wanted it to be? YES! Kind of shocking, but the weight/tension combination pretty much works. If those new bands are to be trusted, this is looking to be a great setup.

But there was something I still didn't like... the eyecup. It's your typical eyecup shaped to "fit" the typical human face and block out some of the extraneous light. It's kind of stiff and doesn't fit my face very well. But SmallHD has been including their new, soft, round eyecup with the DP4 lately (and you can buy one on their website for $20) and I really like that thing. So out of curiosity I pulled off the Zacuto eyecup, fog shield, and 16x9 mask (not even sure what that's for) and stuck on the SmallHD, which went on perfectly.

WOW. Not only does this make the thing useable from different angles of approach, it doesn't hurt my cheek when I push it around, so I can easily and quickly adjust the angle of the loupe as my shot dictates. I don't think the fogshield will be needed, because the surface of the lens is farther from my eye with the round cup. Anyway, I'm sold, this is a great setup, it's light, simple, and awesome. I recommend it. Cheers.

Deanoise, Are you still able to use the Z-finder's lens cap and sun mask with your modification? Thanks.

The lens cap seems just a bit too big to fit in the SmallHD eyepiece, I'm sure there's something that would work (actually, I think I have one from SmallHD). And there's probably a way to nest the 16x9 mask in there but I haven't tried. I actually like it better without it, I can see the image pretty well without sticking my eyeball right on the thing.

Looks like I'll have to buy Small HD's circular eyecup AND protective lens cap if I want sun protection of the optics. For I, like you, am not a fan of the "typical eyecup" that Zacuto provides with their Z-finder.

Good review! I just got my Z-Finder and the bands snapped on the first day too. Hope they send me a replacement soon. One other minor problem is that I notice the z-finder doesn't sit flat properly when using the larger battery. It kinda pushes at the battery down. Otherwise great optics and yeah I don't need peaking and often don't even need to punch in unless I want to be really sure. I'm looking forward to using it in the field to see how well it works in practice.

Really? Thats good to know! I have a Ninja 2 and really don't want to add another EVF like the DP4 or similar to the camera. I've borrowed a Zacuto EVF and have loved it for focus and was thinking of buying one as I find the C100 LCD isn't great for focus on its own, but if like you say its better with the Z-Finder then I might give it a try. Though £300 isn't nice for a piece of plastic! :undecided

Thanks for the write up.

I hope its just the lens distortion but those photos make the Zacuto look gigantic compared to the C100!

Just wanted to update on my issues. Zacuto is sending me new z-bands and as it turns out they are working on a new skirt for the Z-finder to accommodate the larger batteries. They certainly are responsive to feedback!

Burners, it is a bit on the large side, especially with the two spacers in it like I have it, but it's a lot lighter than it looks. Actually looks pretty cool to me, in a cyborg kind of way.

The image may be exaggerating the size a little bit but I can tell you that the z-finder is pretty big. It is not some small adapter hanging off camera, it is pretty significant.

I don't know about you, but I struggle to remove the C100 Z-finder while the frame is on the LCD. It snaps on easy enough but is a bear to remove.
When it gets hot out out I use a eyecup I devised years ago.
My replacement Z-bands are on their way!

Nice little vid, Rusty, and I really like your Zacuto muffy thing. As for removing the finder, I just slide the whole thing off the LCD rather than leaving the frame on there and snapping off loupe. Neither solution seems ideal, but there you go.

I had an outdoor shoot this past weekend and need to find a better solution than the LCDVF. I want to like the Zfinder for the C100 but keep hearing things like:
1. Hard to remove
2. Eye cup is not comfortable ($20 replacement fixes that)
3. It's big!
4. Z-bands don't offer incremental angle positioning (once you place your eye on it, it falls to the lowest position)
5. It is expensive

That said, the optics are great and after trying the LCDVF, that's important!

Has anyone received these mythical new Z bands from Zacuto yet? Mine were supposed to be sent out a week ago, no show...

I pulled out my Zfinder for my 7D and it looked miniscule. I popped it on the 7d and pulled it up to my face in shooting position and my arms felt just right. I pulled the C100 with zfinder up to my face and my arms felt pushed out way to far and I could feel that the weight of the camera was now away from my body. It tired my arms quicker too.

The setup needs to be shorter in my mind. It works, mind you, and the quality of the image is quite good, but ergonomically it just doesn't feel as good as the zfinders on DSLRs. At least to me. I used it sparingly on a wedding a shot over the weekend and relied on the EVF for most shots instead.

Hi Deanoise, We're working on a new method because our original version was not up to scratch. (Oh the joys of new products!) We've been holding off on sending replacements until the new version is ready. Should be today actually. Please email kenton@zacuto.com and we'll make sure we have all the info to send you a new set.
