c100 vs 60D

I currently shoot with the 60D. I understand that the color sampling is the same for the 60D and the c100 (4:2:0). The compression method, however, differs with the 60d using AVC (converted to Prores 422LT) and the c100 uses the AVCHD codec which I hear is not as good (both AVC and AVCHD utilize MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression.)

Can I expect the same color grading quality and capacity with the c100 footage in FCP that I have come to expect with my 60D footage?

What about general image quality - is the c100 considered a superior image to the 60D/7D ? Also, is the Jello effect cured in the c100 as it is in the c300?

Thanks,

Jonathan

The jello should be the same as the C300 but it is not cured. The image will be way ahead of a 60D. Much better resolution and DR in any mode but EOS Standard

AVCHD is far better than the H.264 implementation in the 60D. Bar none. However, color grading quality will somewhat be the same given the same color space.

Ok great. Thank you Philip and Gary.

So what exactly does the HDMI out "uncompressed" signal mean? Does this mean it's 4:4:4 or simply less MPEG/H.264 compression? If the later then how much less?

The C100 uses the same sensor as the C300, so rolling shutter etc should be comparable. It also has Canon Log the same as a C300 for grading. Noel Evans and I did a C100/C300 test and while the AVCHD is not as good as the C300s XF codec, Noel seemed to think the image quality very good (hopefully he will have the comparison up soon).

If you watch this video you will see the C100 is better image quality than a 5DIII, so I'd expect it to be much better than a 60D/7D. I have a 7D so will be doing a comparison video with 7D/C100+AVCHD/C100+Ninja 2 this weekend.

Did some research.. if someone could confirm the HDMI out will give me 10 bit 4:2:2 ??? And this is better than the in camera recording on a c300?

As mentioned above 8 Bit 4:2:2. Stick a Nanoflash on it and you would probably be getting a very similar codec and image to the C300. Shame about the HDMI connection though (SDI would have made it a winning combo).

I have done two test grades from Caleb's footage. I think the files and codec holds up at least as well as one can expect.

If anyone plans do to extensive grading or are after a certain look, I can imagine that they'd go for 8 bit 4:2:2 ProRes instead. Kind of a "just in case" scenario.

Also, there is no comparison between DSLR footage and the Canon C-line.
