C100: C100 v BMC4K

Simple side by side with a color chart.
BMC4K shot in 4K to a 1080 TL and also shot at 1080p in camera both in video and film mode. C100 shot with C-log and WDR settings.
Same lens Sigma 17-50 2.8 (common and affordable) with same ND .9 ND on the lens at F/8. Both cameras shot at 400iso. Focus is set on the cactus across the street.

All images untouched and straight out of the camera until the end where I did a white pick off the color chart and added some saturation to each camera. But for the C100 in Log I had to drop the black level to match the BMC4k's black level. Which leads me to believe that the C100 edges out the BMC4k in DR not only because I had to drop it's blacks but also because I was shooting 400iso instead of 850 recommended by Canon.

Link to dropbox download: Had to remove. It was DL'd so much I got a dropbox suspension! LOL!

I was really surprised how close they looked. To my eye, the C100 seemed a little sharper.
Neck and neck. C100 sharpness on 0 so you can go either way in camera. But the BMC4k suppresses moire better and aliases a bit less. I like having both cameras. I just like cameras. More than I should like cameras. I have a lot of cameras. I have too many cameras. I need another camera. I shouldn't buy anymore cameras right now.

Best post to date! Too many good cameras.....

To my eye, the C100 WDR footage looked like it was shot with a "video camera". Negativity implied on purpose. There also appears to be more moire in the roof in the C100 footage. I have a C300 and don't like the WDR setting on it, either.

Go here and see more thoughts on the 2 cameras. Basically, I can make both the cameras look indistinguishable from each other. But I'll say this here. Do you think the video mode of the BMC4k doesn't have a "video camera" look to it? That is why you see video mode from the BMC and WDR from the C100 and C-log from the C100 and the Film mode from the BMC. Wanna know why it also looks "video camera"? Its a shot across my street. Both cameras can be made to look cinematic.

I'd like to see some quick movement shots from the BM4k, compared to the C100 with its rolling shutter, to see how stark the difference is with the global shutter.

Great to see this comparison. Howsoever tempting the BMC4K price maybe, we have been corrupted by the high ISOs of Canon.

This also strengthens the point of view of Arri and Canon that most of the manufacturers haven't given us good HD and are jumping into 4K. Ideally if we believe the resolution hype of a few companies then 4K should have blown away the 1080 of the C100

Thank you Dusty for the test.
I had a question regarding the lens...did you ever try the Canon 17-55mm? If so, is there one better than the other?

Nice test. I was surprised to see the C100 having more moire than the BMC. Both look good…more about the indian than the arrow these days.

Hello...I am EIREHotpur...I too have this disease...I too love cameras...My real problem is I don't have as many cameras as dusty....this to me must be my aim for 2014-2015....to catch up.

Were you ever tempted to get a second C100 to match up perfect with the first one?

The thing with 4k is that it is the new buzzword in Camera world that means anything new has to mention 4k as a feature or a future upgrade in order to stay relevant because it is all marketing.

My buddy has a C100 so If I ever need a second camera it's a phone call away.

17-55mm stays on my camera 98% of the time. Amazing image quality and very versatile.... Also the IS is a huge winner.
