C100: C100 to Projector at event

Looking for a little help with this if anyone's done it before.

I was asked to run a feed from camera through AV desk to live projector screen at an event recently. Was only asked the day before so I said no, but I'm hoping I can offer it to the same people in future.

Basically I'm looking to send either the C100's HDMI or AV Out to the AV desk, which has a BNC connection.

There's no SDI out, so I'm assuming I need a converter to change the HDMI to SD and then send a BNC cable from convertor to desk - but I'm not too sure of the details or what I'd need to get exactly - Is it something like short HDMI cable, convertor (HD - SDI) and a long BNC?

Or could I use the AV Out without a convertor? Just RCA - BNC Female - BNC Male into the desk?

I don't mind sending them an SD signal, it's just for the audience to see the speakers and I don't think they can take HD anyway, so if just a long BNC from the AV out to the desk is cheaper then I'll go with that.

All help greatly appreciated

Hope that makes some sense!

BNC is probably one of the following:

1) Analogue Standard Def Composite Video
2) Digital SDI Standard Def Video
3) Digital HSDI High Def Video

Potential solutions:

1) BNC to RCA adapter, use AV output from C100, which downconverts to Standard Def. Check your aspect ratio matches up with what the projector is expecting.
2) You'll need to convert analogue AV Output to digital: http://cvp.com/index.php?t=product/bmd_analogue_to_sdi_converter
3) You'll need to convert HDMI to HSDI: http://www.proav.co.uk/Atomos-Connect-AC-H2S-HDMI-to-HD-SDI-Converter/p34496.aspx

Get a firm idea of what their BNC input actually is. if in doubt, post back with the mixer/switcher model number and input board options, and we can give you a steer based on that.

Ben.

The one time I've done this, I ran the HDMI out of my C100 to a DVI converter on a small VGA switcher that made the run to an overflow room. I didn't have to worry about audio. It worked just fine.

Thanks for the reponses. I'll get on to the AV company and get some more details.

mhood - have you a link to exactly what you used to do that?

No, I'm sorry but I don't. The AV company supplied everything except the HDMI cable. It was a standard VGA switcher with a DVI input and an HDMI/DVI adapter. They handled the VGA feed to the overflow room's projector.

I occasionally shoot for live webcasts, which require 720p50 or 720p60 - which would be a bit of a challenge for a C100, but they already have a Black Magic converter box which takes 1080i50 and downconverts to 720p50 on HD-SDI. The Atomos converter is great too if you just need 1080p

But there's an extra delay - not much, really not much at all - but due to to the delay from the camera to the HDMI, plus the HDMI through the converter, plus the delay through the switcher, and the delay inherent in the projector, a frame here and a frame there adds up. Usually, that's okay, but it's good to set expectations.

Note that it's good to get from HDMI to HD-SDI simply because HDMI doesn't travel well - after 7-10 meters, things can get flakey. You can get adaptors that put HDMI through Cat5 cabling which is easier to route and cheaper to get runs made of, but it's still HDMI and it likes a good strong signal. SDI and HD-SDI can run hundreds of feet on a 75 Ohm co-ax.

Another thing is that non-locking connectors love to work loose and fall off at the most inopportune moment, which is why the C300 bristles with BNC connectors, and the C100 doesn't. If I were doing this on a regular basis with a client who doesn't have a Black Magic or AJA (HA-5Plus) converter box, it would make sense to invest in one IMHO. Still cheaper than a C300. LOL

EDIT: No - that report was a false alarm. Atomos does NOT Down Convert. Move on, nothing to see... ;-)

I have been told that the Atomos unit can down-convert. I've checked the manual, as I've not experienced this:

http://www.atomos.com/downloads/connect/manual/Atomos-Connect-Manual-DIGI.pdf

Page 10. But check out Page 7.

My concern is that this seems to relate to the Test Pattern Generator. Also, the table on P.7 seems to suggest 1080i50 goes to 720p60 so again, I'm not so sure. In the past with these units, it's always been a given that they DON'T down-convert. The manual hints at it, but doesn't seem to make sense beyond a Test Pattern Generator.

All I know is... the Black Magic converter box seems to work just fine in my need for 1080i50 to 720p50.

If the projector takes HDMI in, you could use a Nyrius Aries Pro to feed your C100 wirelessly. Attach an Akron or similar USB battery to the Nyrius on the camera, and it's an easy live feed.
