C100 test

There was a couple of hours of daylight left yesterday when the FedEx guy delivered my lenses...so I was straight out the door :)

My upload lacked bits, so this isn't as sharp as the footage I shot. And I cringe at some of the handheld roughness...but it is what it is..

Very happy with the camera...

I went to Currumbin Beach (Gold Coast, Australia) this morning and shot a test as well. AVCHD + Wide DR mode. Nothing too fancy, just a test of AVCHD workflow to web video. Not trying to max out video quality, just see what could be done with AVCHD > FCPX > Vimeo with no grading.

Matt, it almost seems like there is some moire of some sort in some of the shots? I noticed it on a number of the beach scenes, and at the end on the lens cap. Downloaded the source file to make sure.

Man, that is annoying. Is all footage interlaced until you go through the pulldown steps? I feel like this is going back to the HV30.

I haven't used my HV30 for anything serious for a long time, but I used to edit on Vegas, and had to run everything through Cineform NeoScene. I now edit with Premiere, not sure if it works the same way there or not.

Thanks for sharing - Great Dynamic Range , surprised about the AVCHD Codec - i'ts a great image overall!

@airwolf: looks mor like compression artefacts to me... not sure though...

I know Matt has a ninja two on order. Ive got some C300 side by side here, and Im sorry I havent got them up - busy atm.

Theres no pulldown post work needed on the C100 - as Matt said just a blip his end. I can confirm side by side with the C300 in Canon log mode - remarkably similar image.

Looking forward to seeing the comparison Noel! Yes, my FCPX output was messed up originally, I have fixed it up and uploaded a higher bit-rate version so looks much better. First time messing around with it :undecided.

As Noel says I have a Ninja 2 on order but no ETA at present, rest assured as soon as I get it I will be straight onto a C100/Ninja 2/Canon Log test and comparison with AVCHD/Wide DR!

At this stage my overall impression is that AVCHD and Wide DR is very good image quality, at least much better than other AVCHD cameras I have used. I come from DSLR world and everyone in that arena I have shown the footage to has been blown away. We are not high end pros fighting over 4K and 240+ fps. I can say that I am in love with my new camera :love4:. It's awesome!

This is terrific news and everything I'd hoped for. When things are less hectic and you have time to share your thoughts in more detail I'm sure I'm not the only one that will be interested to read and see what you've found. My C100 arrives tomorrow :-)

Nice shots Matt, and you've really nailed the compression. What settings?
Thanks! I enjoyed your clip too, how are you finding the camera? I think it's awesome (for me at least!).
I edited in FCPX, then exported the master file as a ProRes HQ MOV. I then loaded into Adobe Media Encoder and queued up a few versions for Vimeo and my Apple TV. I used the preset settings but I maxed out the bit-rate to 25 and turned on a couple of the higher quality options. I'll experiment more later to see what effect there is but for now I thought that would give a good enough quality for web video.

Thanks for sharing mate.

I feel the same way about the camera...sharp images, more dr than I've ever had the chance to work with, and I love that you can strip it down (removing top and side handle) which leaves it looking a lot like a medium format camera.
It's light enough with the 17-55 to fly on the steadicam merlin...trying to get it balanced now.

I spent an hour with it in the city last night and high iso quality is really something. There's a lot of number targets that this camera doesn't hit (4:2:2 internal, 60p, 10 bit), but for how and what I like to shoot this camera just works, and leaves me with that tingly feeling when I review the image :).

Apparently my Ninja has arrived at the store so I should be able to do a comparison by this weekend. Can't wait! There are already comparisons coming up online tho, but I'll still do one for my own purposes to see what I can get out of it. I'll post the link when it's done.
