C100: C100 shuts off after five seconds with third-party batteries (and some from Canon)

I recently noticed my C100 would shut down briefly after being turned on. Under specific circumstances.

Increasingly, it's become predictable: any four-contact battery (the stock battery) works fine; any two-contact battery (third party and lower-end Canon batteries) shuts off after five seconds, inexplicably.

I noticed some corrosion and the smell of a short circuit near the battery contacts.

What's going on? I figure I should send this bad boy in for repairs, but is there anything else worth trying first? Anyone else shared this experience?

I use only original batteries and have a similar problem. The camera switches on for about 5seconds then shuts off. Only repeatedly removing, inserting the battery again and switching on \ off will it stay on after a couple of attempts. I left my camera connected to the power supply via mains for 24 hours as per instructions by the manual to charge the internal battery but hasn't seemed to make a difference. It seems only to happen the first time using the camera after a a few days on non-use

Due to the burning smell, I'd stop using the camera immediately and make a service appointment with Canon:

Canon has different batteries for XF100/300 and cinema C100/C300 cameras. If you use XF battery then camera will shut down after 5sec.

I checked again and there's no burning smell, just a little corrosion on the contacts and the third-party battery still smells a little like a battery, just a vinyl smell. It's on a job now but as soon as that's done I'll discontinue use. 6060 Sunset is just down the road, for better or worse. :(

But interestingly this is ONLY with third-party and XF-like batteries, the ones with two contacts rather than four. Picking up another genuine C100 battery in the mean time, but I ran this guy reliably off an XF battery and a third-party battery for years, admittedly with the correct battery as my primary one.

My experience is EXACTLY the same as Burners, though. I haven't been shooting lately (I shoot as a hobby, work in post for money) and this happens only after durations of non-use. Strange, man... strange.

Annoying.

The XF100, XF105, XF200, XF205, XF300, and XF305 all use the same BP-955 battery that's supplied with the C100, C300, C500.

I had XF100 and when I buy C100 then I must buy new BP-955 batteries, old batteries don't work with C100. I don't have XF100 now but yes - I think that you can use new C100 BP-955 also for XF100.

My two C100s are now having this problem even after they have been used recently. Last night I had been filming with no issues for a couple of hours. I Then switched off the camera to change the battery (both originals). New battery goes in, switch on and .....nothing. Two more switches off and re-inserts and the camera comes on.

It occurred to me that it could be something to do with how long between connecting the battery and switching on. Next time I am going to wait a few seconds after inserting the battery before switching on.

Just read a article about the c100 and condensation. If camera detects condensation it automatically switches off. I am in Rio de Janeiro, humidity rife.....
