C100 / RED Scarlet / 5D MkIII Comparison

Totally Usable
Okay, my first "test" is done. This (non-scientific) test features a DSC Labs "Splash" chart with three different cameras pointed at it: the Canon EOS C100, the Canon 5D Mark III and the RED Scarlet. Each camera was using the same 85mm f1.2L lens, under the same, controlled lighting conditions (5600K Lowel Compact Fluorescent Bulbs). Each camera was set to 5600K white balance, and 1/60 shutter speed at 24P.

The 5D was set on 1080/24P (ALL-I Codec), with the ISO set to 640. The Picture Profile was set to Stu Maschwitz' "ProLost" settings. The lens was set to f9.

The C100 was set to ISO 850, and shot in Wide DR, Cinema, and EOS Standard picture profiles, with the lens set to between f9 and f11.

The RED Scarlet was set to ISO 800, and REDCODE 6:1. The lens was set to f7.1.

All raw clips were dropped into a 1080/24p timeline in Premiere CS6, and exported to ProResHQ. That file was then converted to a maximum-bit-rate Vimeo HD file for uploading.

If anyone has any thoughts/suggestions on what they'd like to see, or specific settings they'd like me to use, SEND ME A PM and I'll consider it.

I do not have a resolution chart, or a true dynamic range chart. This will be only as "scientific" as I can make it, and I will try to keep the clips very short so I can provide the raw files for download.

Shoot some flesh, some deep focus semi wide, A car in open shade and in full sunlight, and maybe an interview set up? Looking forward to this!

+1 on seeing skin tones.

My prediction on moire = 1st Scarlet, 2nd c100, last 5dm3

My predictions on skin tones = 1st c100, 2nd 5dm3, last scarlet

Maybe add a night time city scape with all iris settings at f5.6. This will show the weakness of the Scarlet is my prediction.

I've updated the first post with my initial "test," presented here as a blind viewing of clips both raw and quickly color-corrected. Enjoy, and I'll post the breakdown of what's what a bit later, even though you'll probably be able to figure it out.

Just posted a breakdown of which camera is which on the Vimeo page. It's hidden at the bottom of the description, so as not to ruin it for anyone.
