C100 raw clip

KINOKS

I had a preproduction C100 model in my hands. Shot some stress tests, but later on figured that all the clips had the whites clipped at app. 80IRE. So then I fiddled around and found that this only happened at ISOs below 800. Unfortunately I figured this out just when I had to return the camera, so I the end I just snapped a short clip at varying exposure values (using aperture).

It was shot in "cinema mode", ISO800 with Canon L 24 - 70 at 24mm in 1080 25p.
I can't give you any more info as the menus didn't have any. As I said, it was a preproduction model.
Only had a "normal" and a "cinema" gamma option and nothing more. No other settings regarding image control.

Regarding image quality: I'm surprised at the huge amount of chroma noise present in the picture. You can't push the levels.
(I'm not used at shooting with low bitrate codecs, so maybe this is normal??)

Agreed. I was just poking a little fun. That clip is really sharp the dancing noise in the clip is actually rain in the background. Why no 60P CANON??????? sigh

I'm guess you will see it in a firmware update about 4-6 months after the C300 gets 1080p60 (I'm sure Canon will do this at some point rather than hack prices with all the competition).

I downloaded the MTS file and then brought it into Sony Vegas Pro, applied a few minor tweaks ( adjust gamma, increase saturation, sharpen slightly ) and then exported a full resolution frame.

Here's a link to download a full resolution frame-grab. Download the JPEG file to view at full resolution...

In order for Canon to release a firmware update to the C300 or C100, they would have to admit to lying about the native hardware capabilities of these cameras. In other words, the cameras are hardware limited to 30p or less according to Canon.

I'm no camera engineer but how hard could it be to eek out another 4mbps from the processors to get 1080 60p at 28mbps... Is it really that taxing on the hardware?

BTW I wonder if the highlight blowout in the initial demo film happen when they tried to film at less than 800 IDSO, anyone remember?

Hmm maybe it's just me but the screenshot linked a few posts up is pretty soft.

I was thinking the same thing when I processed it. ( which is why I applied a tiny bit of sharpening to it )

I don't think this footage was shot under ideal conditions and the firmware isn't finalized, so I wouldn't judge camera sharpness based on this one clip.

...The main thing for me was seeing that the camera appears to have a good dynamic range, so that it's holding a fair bit of detail in back-lit clouds and the shadows under the tree.

Just opened the clip instead of the grab and it's much sharper. Not C300 sharp but still pretty darn sharp and detailed.
