C100: C100 or used F3?

Kewl, a codec-pissing-match.

There has actually been a lots of useful insights from everyone's responses, and I thank you all.

On pure image alone, I like the F3 much better. In fact, the only thing I like about the C100 better than the F3, is the form factor. But, at least in my experience, Canon is requested more than Sony. I've never had a request for a C100, but I do get more C300 requests than F3 requests (and more RED requests than the other two combined). But, if it was up to me, I'd choose the F3 every time over the C100.

nah, no pissing match at all. Me and Gary go way back. It's just legitimate question. Maybe he knows something we don't.

I know AVCHD at higher bit-rates can hold up well to XDcam EX, but wondering how it is said to be "stronger" remembering that even when certain aspects of signal compression and storage are "better" it doesn't necessarily always translate into visible differences.

Lyle what have you decided? C100 or F3?

Good point. On the "Performance in Person" Panasonic AG-AF100 events in 2011 Art Aldrich presented in Austin Texas and made a case for AVCHD being a stronger than P2 in some cases. Some say Panasonic is a CODEC company. Not a camera company.

Coming from a broadcast background and years of Sony (starting with Beta SP) I actually still get a Pavlov's-dog response to the little cinealta label, SDI, smpte TC, slog, all the little things that say: "I'm a real camera". 12 months ago the F3 was a legitimate A list camera (it probably still is). We are living in a crazy-ole world though. No one really has anything better to do all day than to sit around and read crap online and you get this phenomena of the creative and executive end asking for cameras by name. I could very easily bliss-out with an F3 and use a GH3 for run-n-gun, but I think C100 is a better business choice in todays market, I will sell my SD 702t and 552 to finance acquiring a pix240 down the line, hang on to the smart slate.

Buddy just got the C100 and brought it over to my house yesterday.

I can't get over how small it is.

Hand holding it is much more ergonomic and comfortable over the F3, if you shoot a lot that way.

I was impressed.

I shot with the Sony EX3 quite a bit, so when the F3 came out I was very excited, but I could never get comfortable with it. Everything seems akward on the F3 and when it came to handheld it was a complete wipe out. I could not handhold it with out a rig. When I held the C300 for the first time, I fell in love with cinema again. Image quality is so close between the two cameras I think it comes down to the skill of the individual shooter. I also would ask the question: why are there so many F3's on the market?

I would guess that folks want to upgrade to the F5. Its in the same price bracket so if you can swing an F3 you should be able to swing an F5. And I am guessing everyone with an F3 has all the gadgets that you need for an F5 already. Lenses etc.

. . .and rental houses, who I assume are going straight to the f55.

Yep there are a lot of F3's on the market right now as independent owner/operators and rental houses make room for F5/F55 shipping very very soon.

And for those who've made their money back with the camera don't need to care about how much money they get back on one, that's why we've seen some really good deals and low prices and it won't last. Once they find new homes there will be fewer F3's on the market and no-one is going to buy a new F3 for $14,000 so get one while its hot... after that you're looking at quite a big jump up to get into the F5 or F55, or C500 for that matter.
