C100 official video sample

Heavily graded. I have only seen it on a iPad so I will reserve comment, but I am always suspicious of heavily graded demos that cover up flaws. On the iPad the faces seemed to have blown out sections and trouble in high DR scenes, which should be a strength of this sensor, but I want to see this film on a real monitor before I blame the new codec for highly resolved consumer cam look.

I can see the Canon people loving the whole C theme when they first heard about the idea. Personally I found the video extremely cringing (I cringed with horror at the 'Are you C girls?' and 'C POWER!!' lines), but hey...they are cool French people and they can get away with murder!
Nevertheless, there's beautiful imagery and the video is fantastic at showing some of the camera strengths (and weaknesses?), which is what it's all about. I agree it's hard to tell on Vimeo how strong the codec is, and the grading doesn't quite help. There are some blown out backlights on faces - not sure if it's a stylistic choice or it was just a difficult lighting situation to handle even with 12 stops of DR.
As always, I'll reserve my final decision once I can test the camera, but it looks quite promising.

The grade was too aggressive to really get a good look at the capabilities.

Agreed. There were a small number of shots that came through where you could pick the DR and resolution - not enough. Many shots were post stabilised as well which also kills the ability to see them for what they are.

Looks Great, gotta pick one up. The heavy grading just tell me that it holds up better to grading than any DSLR =) IMO

I posted this in another C100 thread. The Vimeo sample video is low resolution, so it won't give you a good idea about what the finished image is like.

Here are the specs from the Canon Sample video pulled from the Vimeo website:

Was not impressed by the footage at all. Still waiting until I can use it for myself as I really like the design/size/weight of the camera, but this isn't a great start.

Looks more versatile than the BMC from the BTS =) Just wish the posted the 1080p version

WTF? There´s a difference between a heavy grade, like the cyan/orange blockbuster craze and this. This looks like a 2005 dramatized reality TV show.

It was a bit of everything. They said they used 12 EF lenses.

The Behind the Scenes was interesting. It looks like they were shooting at 800 ISO, which is the base ISO, at least in the airport terminal shots. I thought the faces held up pretty well there in the mixed lighting.

Interesting to see all of the location work too - on the jeep, underwater "housing", on the hang glider, etc. Obviously ready to go as is for many purposes.

Best,
Michael

I like the look of this camera. I would 100% be on board if it offered 60p even at 720. I do a lot of single camera, small crew shoots and rely on overcranking as a standard Broll in nearly every video I produce. The lack of the inclusion of this...especially given the ability of the camera to do so, is disappointing.

I won't comment too much on the "C" theme except to say I agree with an earlier post about it being cringe-worthy. Should have done the video without saying or showing C every 5 seconds. It literally added nothing positive to the final product. Yes, we know it's a Canon camera. Sheesh.

...I converted the 720p Flash FLV video to uncompressed AVI so I could walk through the film frame-by-frame, and I now realize that this video is definitely NOT for critical evaluation of the camera. There are tons of focusing errors in this film, which makes me think that the film-makers should have been using a larger field monitor when shooting. So much of the film is out of focus, and it's only hidden by the fast cutting and lower resolution of Vimeo.

He said that he was asked to use a certain picture profile called "Wide DR Gamma," and that it is [80%] of C-Log and that "you have no obligation to color grading."

He begins to talk about this at around 2:05

He also states that he crushed the blacks far on purpose.
