C100: C100 - Ninja ergonomics

Anyone had a chance to test the combo in the field yet? Wondering how it "feels" for extended handheld? Also don't remember seeing any comparison between ninja/c100 and c300 internal?

I wrote about it here and there is video that compares pic quality.

I prefer the NanoFlash to the Ninja, it is smaller lighter and uses less power and uses CF cards, it is also using a really efficient codec XDcam at 100mb/s it is very good and uses a lot less space then PROres422, and it edits natively in FCPX.

Edit:

I was writing about the C100. My guess is that the C300 would be very close to the Ninja. The C100 has a 420 codec that actually is very good and only for special use like chroma keying or heavy grading is there a difference, the C300 has a beautiful 422. I would not bother with an external recorder on the C300, and a C100 with an external recorder is in my mind a C300, for less money and a bit more cumbersome with the recorder, but smaller and lighter naked.

If you want to get the utmost quality of the C100, the Ninja-2 is the go-to recorder in my opinion. It will remove the pulldown flags for both 24p and 30p, it's small and light with an SSD in the caddy (I can easily still shoot handled with it attached via a Pearstone articulating arm, though I can't speak for extended hand-held shooting), and it is a decent 2nd monitor to boot. With the latest firmware that adds HDMI start/stop flags and timecode support, it's literally a no-brainer to use. Just hit record on your camera! I would always dual-record to SD card and the Ninja-2 just for backup.

At this point in time, it's the absolute best option for the price, in my opinion.

Could someone please point me to a comparison of C100 with Ninja2 and C300 footage? Are they the same?

Both cameras produce a similar colour balance.!
The overpriced 8bit C100/Ninja combo will be better with things like the a 35mm sensor, better low light, ND wheel, replaceable batteries, and easily accessible external buttons

Olof, have you actually used the nanoflash wih the C100 yet? I was leaning towards the nanoflash as well. Does it start/stop with the camera's record button? And will it correctly remove the pulldown?

The article states it's 422 but the Atomos CEO doesn't. I searched for the answer but never found it from a Canon source. You would think Canon would want us to know this.

What's interesting is how Canon worked with Atomos on the HDMI out signal making it work very well with the Ninja.

canon has repeatedly confirmed that the HDMI out is 4:2:2 8 bit.

This has passed the point of insanity. In previous posts I quoted communications with Canon Japan, Canon USA, and Canon Professional center Hollywood. Jim Martin of FilmTools has similarly posted. the only reason I responded is that the initial idea HDMI out was 4:2:0 came from me quoting Canon support who did not have the real specs. There is no need to drag this out with requests to repost the same stuff repeatedly.

The TC from the C100 HDMI is not read by the NanoFlash yet, and the neither is the HDMI record trigger.

I spoke with Convergent Design tech support today and they will have those updates possible by the first of next year. There will be a FW update.

I can confirm that the NF does record the C100 PF30 as 30P (29.97P), this works very well in FCPX the files are flagged 1080P 29.97, unlike the native C100 files that are a bit flaky to deal with.

As to the source of my statement about 8bit 422, I spoke with a Canon tech rep in person last week and she confirmed this. Her name is Sophia Iguchi from the Canon "Pro Engineering & Solutions Division".

I find that hard to believe. They said they were working on an update of the nanoFlash firmware to read FS100 timecode via HDMI over a year ago. Since then it's been just empty promises and then simply non-response (instead of admitting they can't or won't).

This sad story is here for everyone to see:
