C100: C100 MKII : strong horizontal "noise-banding" in Wide DR.

Hi there,

Strange sensor problem with C100 MKII.. ?
I've made some shots in low light and I've noticed creepy horizontal moving bands on LCD.. and rushes !

Settings : Wide DR (by default), from 500 to 1600 ISO, 180°, MP4 1080 25p.
- ABB and peripheral illumination correction "OFF" change nothing.
- It's less visible but still present in C-Log.
- It's less visible around 400 and 2000 ISO
- The phenomenon disappears with other CP.

Screenshots with the lens cap (Canon 18-135 mm EFS)
EDIT : Sorry, how can I share high resolution pics, like this : http://nsm08.casimages.com/img/2015/12/02//15120207132713514213799759.jpg ?

Defective unit or... ? :(
Thanks for your thoughts.

I'm not seeing anything in either the jpg or mp4 submissions. I do remember reading about this somewhere. I checked one of my C100IIs against your settings and found nothing. I'll check my other later today as it's out in the field now.

Thanks for your test and feedback, Control4userguy.
Indeed, JPG are not the best illustration here.. But I'm really surpised by MP4.
I can see the "moving lines" via 3 different monitors (+ C100 MKII LCD).
Let me know about your second camera when you'll have time.

I have same problem and sent back my C100mk2 to Canon for check it but Canon said that my C100mk2 is fine and they sent back to me. Horizontal yellow banding is visible especially with Wide DR. And in high contrast scene and in low light scene it appears. In low light scene I can see blue and yellow line. And in high contrast scene, I can see yellow horizontal line in some situation. This problem cause of sensor read out Canon said so. So your C100mk2 doesn't have problem but it's problem of all C series I think. I have shot with C300mk2 and it was very visible with C-log2 even graded.

Thanks Hikari.
So, sending unit to repair would be futile.. Quite frustrating (especially with the "nice" Wide DR).
If all C series are concerned, it's surprising to not read more reports.
Control4 doesn't notice any issues.. strange.

Tested a second C100II under same conditions as described in posts #1 & #5. I don't see anything as described. In fact, I don't see any horizontal lines in your links. Perhaps my monitor is weak or my eyes or both. Tried a professional monitor on my B cam- still nothing irregular.

This looks about normal to my eyes. WIDE DR is probably the worst profile for noise. However, you can only see this banding if your monitor is too bright, the contrast is not set correctly, etc. Try watching real footage shot in WIDE DR on a calibrated monitor, or at least a nice HDTV calibrated with a test pattern bluray or something. Then let's see how bad it actually is. Any camera will yield noisy footage on a poorly set up monitor.

Yeah, I mean I ran footage, popped-off some stills and ran direct to a scaled & calibrated monitor. Nothing strange and that was under WIDE DR, extremely low light and ISO from 500 cranked to the moon.

Thank you.
It's a bit confusing..
I've tested some stuff under the same conditions :
- AF101 (Cine D) and GH4 (Cine D and V-Log) : normally noisy without banding.
- 2 x BMPCC : very clean (both).
- C100 MKII : horizontal colored banding.. I can see it on 3 monitors.
Hikari speaks about "general issues" (post 5).
Another C100 MKII french user (from Le Repaire) doesn't have this problem (he said).
I'm lost...

PS : Try 640/800/850 ISO and more, Control4. Not 500.
