C100: C100 MKI, Ninja 2, a red flash frame

Hi,

Recently my friend shot interviews with his C100 MKI & my Ninja 2. Then he found a red flash frame in some clips in Ninja 2. Does anyone have the same issue before? I googled if some one has the same problem, but couldn’t find any. I don’t have a screen grab, so I can’t show what it looks like.

Here is the setting.

C100 mark I
24Mbps LPCM 24P

Ninja 2(bought in 2013)
Version 4.02
Codec Profile: NDxHD 220(185/175)
SanDisk Extreme SSD 120GB

He mentions that the location was really warm and long day shoot. Canon C100’s internal footage has no issues.
Only SSD in Ninja 2 has a red flash frame in some footage.

I’ve been using Ninja 2 for a few years and never had a problem. But his shoot was the first time shot in NDxHD codec in this Ninja 2.

I just tested the Ninja 2(the same SSD he used)w/my C100 MKI in the same setting for around 60min. I didn’t see any red flash frame in footage although Ninja 2 got really hot.

Any suggestion?

Thank you for in advance!

...Ninja 2 got really hot.
There's definitely a working temperature limit, I can't help with your red frame but I have had an issue where the Ninja 2 was on all day on a short film (int. with no air con) and it did get very hot and came up with the Kangaroo warning on a take, so I powered it off for a while and re-shot the take once the drive and Ninja had cooled. Worked fine for the remainder of the day. Since then I always double check for that kangaroo warning symbol, though it has never happened since then.

Hi Matt,

Thank you for your reply.

I just checked the manual to see what “the Kangaroo warning” looks like. I didn’t know it exists:)

When I use Ninja, I try to turn off whenever I have a chance to keep it cool. So I never had thought that it will get really hot.

I’ll try a few more test to figure out the issue. . .hopefully.

I've shot plenty of super long interviews (3-6 hour continuous rolling) indoors under hot conditions with my C100 and Ninja Blade. Have never seen the Kanga. Maybe it is a Ninja 2 thing that they improved on in the Blade? The Blade does get pretty toasty but never enough to shut down or make red frames. Have you talked with Atomos about it? Maybe its a known issue?

Send this to Atomos support, no one can do anything here. Send a frame grab, the exact kit you were using including the HDMI cable, Drive, memory, mode, frame rate, timecode settings, and how many frames got ruined. Try to explain it thoroughly to get a helpful response.

There is probably no fix for your already shot footage but that's for future shooting if it's a bug you have. I'd thank god I recorded internally and use that for that certain project.

A thought, I've had footage ruined from my D5300 to Ninja2 due to a faulty HDMI cable, interference patterns appeared each frame and then, and no internal back up so...

Hi, puredrifting and Ebrahim,

Thank you guys for your replies.

I’m sorry to hear about the faulty cable ruin the footage, Ebrahim.

I own both Ninja 2 and Ninja Blade, and nowadays mainly use Blade. As to my experience, I’ve never had issues with Ninja . . .footage wise.
It is very reflective screen in sunny conditions outdoors.

The only difference in the shoot was codec. I activated NDxHD codec the day before the shoot.
Everything else was normal settings he usually uses.

I shot another 90min test in NDxHD 220x codec. Ninja 2 got really hot, but the footage was fine.
My friend told me that a red flash frames occurred some footage shot almost end of the day. So maybe it reached the working temperature limit at the end of long hour shoot.

I’ll try to get a screen grab or the part of red flash clip from him, then contact atoms if they know some thing.

To be fair, the problem has only happened to me once in over 2 years, otherwise it's been a fantastic piece of kit.

I just got a few seconds of the clip from my friend.

I thought I'm gonna attach the screen grab here. But I found an exactly same red frame in some sites.

My friend uses Premiere CC and an editor uses (old)Avid. This red frame shows up both editing systems.
As long as I know, this red frame does not occur in C100's internal footage(AVCHD).

Anyway, I just sent an email w/the clip to atomos support.
