Hey guys,

Just wanted to pitch in with my own video review. This one on my main interest in upgrading the C100 - autofocus on a steadicam.

Overall, the AF upgrade is great for handheld, tripod, and monopod, but not so much for letting it do its thing untouched on a steadicam.

I'm definitely curious to see if anybody has some little tricks to share about using the AF feature on a steadicam.

Why not relocate the grip and assign a custom button for focus hold? Let the AF do its thing, hit the focus hold and track your subject, then hit the custom button to activate the AF when you need too.

Hey Dusty,

if they created a compact wireless grip/controller to mount to the gimbal handle, then that would be a perfect solution. Otherwise may as well get a 1st AC to use a remote follow focus. Though, even if I could switch the AF on and off without touching the sled, that reticule ain't moving. So when I refocus using AF, I would have to be composed in center. Really depends on the shot. :-(

Theoretically, if you had a super thin cable and tethered it to the sled. Then I suppose you have to contend with the janky nature of having a sideways mounted c100 grip hanging out on your gimbal handle. Though, at that point, is the trouble to get the AF-Lock trick working worth it?

As a steadicam operator, I would say, if any new toy to add to my rig either gets in my way or constricts me from being creative in my operation then it's not really a new toy. However it does have its place for certain shots within run/gun solo shooting.

GREAT review of this feature. Also I really liked the humor in the video, hilarious! Still, I'm going to send in my C100 when I get a chance. It's still useful enough to get it. I think this is going to start a whole new trend counteracting the 'rule of thirds' composition technique in films and videos everywhere. The Rule of Thirds is dead - long live centered subjects! I'm hoping though that in the future Canon will upgrade the feature to move around the focus reticule with the joystick.

I'm glad you guys found it useful and that at least one person shares my sense of humor :-)

i want to do a followup video including footage from a recent weekend of both a wedding and fashion shoot.

Also so looking to find toys at NAB to do reviews on. Anybody have review requests?
