C100: C100 compact cinema kit

I am just starting to build my custom rigs for the C100.

I find relocating the handle a great help on the shoulder. I will be selling these kits in a week or so, I am still perfecting all the parts, The VF can be anything but I really like the Alphatron. I have the IDX battery outputting power to the C100 and NanoFlash/ other recorder.

The kit comes off quickly and is really quite compact, and it is modular, you don't need the Ninja and Battery cheese plate, FF, or matt box. But when you do add them. I will be making an even more compact version as well.

The last 2 photos was the setup when I tested both the Ninja and NanoFlash outside, I will publish some videos from that compare soon.

For light, the Zacuto EVF cannot be beat. It feels plastic-y and cheap, but it works great. HDMI only (sad), but still, very light. I don't think you can get any lighter with an external EVF than by going with the Zacuto one.

However, I am a fan of the Alphatron.

plan to try using the ninja 2 as the EVF when they realease the loupe for it
That's an interesting idea and might kill two birds with one stone, where did you hear about it?
Googling reveals information going back to 2011 but doesn't look like there is a product available yet.

As far as pricing goes it will be similar to my other kits.

I agree that the Zacuto is very light and quite nice. However the Alphatron is more rugged and I like the menu structure more and the image is the best of the bunch in my opinion, the most like a real built in one on a full size cam. I am sure there will be many more available soon and my kit will accommodate all of them.

I am using the Zacuto relocator on my own Rail adapter right now, I will probably offer the Denz version as well. There is not much point in me making one seeing how there are already 2 versions available at a very reasonable price really, they are complex. I was going to make my own but it does not make sense for me anyway.

One thing about the Ninja interface is it is only touch screen, so a loupe would have to flip up easily. Though the Ninja 2 with the latest firmware is supposed to support the HDMI record trigger, this would be great.

Bear in mind the Ninja does not offer Zebra or peaking, so it is of limited use, and if you output the C100 peaking etc from the camera the Ninja records it. The reason I love the Alphatron is that it has great focus and exposure aids built in. However it has no way of showing if you are recording or not (prove me wrong on this and I would be happy). It is also HDSDI and HDMI and it loops the signal so you can use the Ninja with it. The NanoFlash can output HDSDI even if the incoming signal is HDMI this is a neat trick, and it also shows in the EVF if you are recording on the NanoFlash, it is also lighter by far than the Ninja and it uses very little power.

My AB or IDX battery plates can power both the NanoFlash and the Alphatron as well as the C100 and an on cam light. This is great because the weight is in the back to balance the rig on your shoulder, I always try to put heavy stuff in the back.

Tried this last night with firmware v4.01 and it works!

The original Ninja doesn't support these but the Ninja 2 has zebra, peaking and false colour.

Olof I see you have kept the cover on when plugging in your HDMI cable, I have been taking mine off as I think they are annoying and get too close to the handle which I'd prefer to be as free as possible. It's occurred to me though that the covers are only held on by a little nob of plastic so removing regularly may wear that out. I don't know if the C300 ones are removable but if so have they stood up to regular removal?

im looking to do something similar, but plan to try using the ninja 2 as the EVF when they realease the loupe for it

That'd be great. Can you give us a link talking about this?
Thx!

That kind of rigging just goes against the idea of the C100. They made the C100 to be compact but a rig like feels so wrong.

+1 Totally agree.

For YOU, not for everyone. If they design something to be compact and small then it's even more perfect for rigging then if it were monstrous and heavy. It allows the camera to be used both ways if you wish, which doesn't feel wrong at all. Maybe wrong to you because of what you want to use it for, but for those who benefit from the rigs it's a huge plus.

Stop drawing lines in the sand and calling it black/white...it never is lol.

I had the chance to play with a C100 and loved the form and the way it felt to hold but with that poor VF and odd LCD placement I also felt much of the form advantage to be mute because you'd be tempted to put stuff onto it. Once you've put all that stuff on the C100 what advantage to you have over other large cameras that offer more features and better image quality? I just see the C100 as something you'd use in place for a 5D or 7D offering everything in a box and to put an end to all that crazy rigging.
