C100: C100, Canon wide angle lens 16-35mm VS 14mm?

I shoot a fair amount of events, weddings and docs. I only shoot single camera. I recently switched cameras from the Sony EX-3 to the Canon C100. I purchased the Canon 28-300mm lens which is a great all around lens when you don't have time to switch out lenses. My problem is the 28-300 does not go wide enough when I'm in a smaller space, this is probably due to the 1.5 crop factor of the Canon C100.

So I'm looking for a wide angle lens and I'm debating between the Canon 16-35 VS 14mm. I know the 14mm is sharper on the corners and has less distortion the the 16-35mm, but is that noticeable on C100 with a cropped sensor? One advantage I think with the 16-35mm is that if I was in a situation where one of my subjects, say in a wedding scenario was getting emotional I would be able to punch in for a tighter shot by going to 35mm with being to intrusive. With the 14mm I would obviously have to physically move in tighter which could ruin the moment. I final question is 14mm that much wider than 16mm?

Thanks

Harry, can I add a vote for the Tokina 11-16 2.8?

Good control of distortion, great clarity and sharpness, can be used at f2.8 (better at around 5.6 but virtually hyperfocal by f8).

No, it doesn't have a little red ring around it, but jolly good nonetheless. We used to pay over £12k for lenses that did this on 2/3" cameras.

But then again, I use the Canon 18-55 2.8 for all sorts of GVs (and sounds like it would fit your scenario). Besides which, it is Image Stabilised - a huge bonus.

I'd also consider the EF-S 18-135 STM. Not the fastest lens, not an L lens, but seems great for ENG type work, it has IS and the STM is good for video too. Don´t have it myself (yet), I do fine with the 17-55 2.8 indoors for wide shots...

+1 for Sparticus - just bought one. It's fresh outta the box, but I tried it for half an hour round the showroom of my local dealer (Prokit.co.uk) - very useful range, really impressive close focus too. If a car pulled up with a friend inside, who invited me in to film something they'd tell me about later, I'd take this lens. It reminds me of Sony's SEL18200E.

With the promise of continual AF with the next software, and a better 'One Shot AF', it's a keeper. Not sure I'd give up my 24-105 or 17-55 though.

And, in no way, shape or form, does it do what the Tokina does. Just sayin'.

Thanks for all the info guys, I will definitely check out the EF-S 18-135. Has anybody though noticed distortion on the 16-35mm and is there a big difference going from 16mm to 14mm?

Thanks
Harry

The 16-35mm is one of the 4 lenses most have been buying for the C300.....16-35mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm, and the 24-105mm. The biggest thing to remember is that zooms are built to do multiple jobs where a prime is built to do just 1 job.......which, on the wide lenses, is why on the 14mm you see no or very little distortion or bowing on the sides or top/bottom where the 16-35mm you'll see it.....and less "breathing" on a focus pull...... which is more evident in the EF lenses than the CinePrimes.....

Thanks Jim for the info.
One more question is the distortion at 16mm a NON issue on the C100 because it is a crop sensor and not a full frame sensor like the 5D? The C100 being a cropped sensor wouldn't that eliminate the distortion?

Thanks

No, there is lots of barrel distortion.
