Guys,

what is your recommendation for the best low light run and gun Zoom lens for the C100. It must have IS as well.

Any Suggestions would be great.

Thanks

Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens

It's the only lens I have specifically for my C100 right now, but I haven't felt the need for anything else. Has given me everything I've needed thus far (with documentary and event style work).

I second that emotion! It's not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but very practical. A close second would be the 70-200 f4 IS. The difference in sharpness and contrast to the 24-105 is noticeably better without the need to pixel peep. The 70-200 is my lens of choice on the 5D3 but, with the C100 and the crop factor because I shoot indoors and in relatively small spaces I must resort back to the 24-105.

Wasn't a fan of the 24-105 Canon myself.
Tamron 24-70 f2.8 w/VC (Tamron's IS) I'm a big fan of! Shot many many weddings and concerts with it!

So from what you guys have stated

So far I have 3 contenders

17-55 canon
24-70 tamron
24-105 (but not great in lowlight though)

Any personal experiences to share with these items?

24-70 Tamron -> VC is great on it. Great Bokeh, 2.8 all the way through. This is my go-to live event lens (concert, wedding, etc) Downside is the focus ring goes opposite of Canon's. You get used to it, but certainly annoying at first.

24-105 -> Nice to have the 105 distance. F4 is not great for low light obviously, and its not constant. Camera will read it was f4 all the way through, but it definitely gets darker when you zoom in (zoom out and you see zebras in the same place you didn't see them before -> definitely a noticeable change). Not as sharp as many other lenses.... but gives you more range.. so there's the trade off. Personally I would hate to have this as my lens for a wedding or concert (low light situations).

Edit -> Tamron also doesn't play as nice with adapters as the Canon does when it comes to electronic communication. Not sure if you're ever planning to use adapters to use a lens on another camera, something else to consider as well.

If low light capabilities are of essence I think the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 might be an option though it doesn't have IS.

I have a 50mm 1.4 and I'm always dealing with razor thin DOF issues. I guess it depends on what you need this for..... so far you haven't mentioned what kind a stuff you shoot.

I've been very impressed with Sigma zooms lately. They're operationally very smooth and well-built and optically not too shabby. Might be worth a rental to assess.

There's the 18-35/1.8, but it has limited range and no OS.
There's the 17-50/2.8 OS... better range...
and then the 17-70/2.8-4 OS. Perfect range for S35, but not constant aperture and a smidge less resolution (but fine for HD).

Of course, if you make extensive use of auto features, you may be best off sticking with native glass like the 17-55 (a little less solid) or 24-105 (a little slower). Everything has trade-offs. Rent a few. Figure out what you need, what suits that, and buy with confidence.
