Ben.

Canon Rep at BVE couple days ago assured me no sensor replacement, just something about adding hardware but he lost me.

so seems like its not going to give some kind of harm to an image?
The camera wont loose any IQ. The sensor already has the Dual Pixel AF in it, but the firmware wasn't using it. With the firmware updated and a little tweaking it works. Pretty simple but requires a tech to do it and again some adjustments have to be performed.

i am glad the future is going to be available, but if say true, if it was already there then why, the proper calibration of the sensor was not done right away, and why the filmware tooks over 2 years after the cam was released (talking about c300)!

I think the story was along the lines of 'This is a great feature built into the C100/C300! Oh, hold on a tick, no - it's not going well, each camera is taking too long on the engineer's bench. It's slowing production down and that's going to cost - which will passed onto the customer. Tell you what, let's just park this idea - no Pro is going to actually clamour for Auto Focus. Let's see if anyone's going to notice'.

And we didn't. Well, the C300 community didn't. The C100 community - one man bands, videographers, video-shooting photographers who aren't afraid of AF - did notice, and we grumbled noisily about the one shot AF, and then we complained at how sluggish the Continuous AF was. So the Dual Pixel AF thing is taken off the shelf again, dusted off and put forward as an optional upgrade. It's the extra we'd have probably been asked to pay on top of the existing price. I for one am gagging for it. I know others who really would prefer to save the £330+ and have a cheaper purchase price.

So people make nice noises about the Dual Pixel thing for the C100 - Dan Chung's InterBee videos caused quite a stir. The NewsShooter AF demo convinced quite a few C300 types, and Canon - having denied they'd do this - agreed to doing the same trick on C300s.

So I don't think there's any malice or sneakiness involved. Both cameras were deemed 'overpriced' at launch and suffered a strong downward pressure on purchase price - but this had been pre-empted by the decision not to do all the individual work on a per-camera basis for a feature that Canon thought their market perceived as infra dig.

Tap-to-focus was a dad-cam feature for domestic cameras, then Red used it on the Epic and suddenly 'that's cool'. AF has its place in professional video making, and I know a lot of C300 owners who won't exactly advertise the feature, but will use it. All we need now is face tracking... LOL

Matt, I'm thinking this is something that just wasn't possible when the C100 started to ship. By the time Canon had developed the dual pixel AF in the 70D, they had worked out the kinks and some engineer raised his hand and said "I think we can retrofit this in to the C100". A few months of tinkering and now they've got it. Most companies would have just left it in the lab, so I'm actually quite happy that Canon is willing to take this step and make it available to us without releasing a new C100a or waiting for the next generation to make it public.
