C100: C100 audio question

Was testing out my audio setup with my new C100 and I noticed that when I reviewed my shots using the 'review shot' button on the camera, it would play the last shot recorded, but it would not play any audio through the headphone. The audio was recorded fine by the camera however when I reviewed the shots on my laptop.

Why is this and is there and setting or or other way to fix this?

C300 does this too. I imagine firmware could fix it, but doesn't seem to be any way change currently. I agree- very annoying.

I'm sorry to hijack this thread but what is the audio like coming straight out of camera... Good preamps or are you still going to be using your off camera gear?... I haven't heard anyone talk about the audio quality yet!!

Shot review on the C cameras doesnt have audio playback. Would like it to however.

Scott that depends on where you're coming from. Pro sound recordist set up vs coming from offboard from DSLR?

I ask that because, and whilst I can talk to the C100, the C300 is much better than any of the recorders used for separate audio in the DSLR world, but not in the same league again as a pro sound recordists gear.

Ive used it often with good results.

Yeah, I'm coming from Tascan DR100 with an NTG2... When I purchase the C100 I think I'll pick up the NTG 3!! Seems a killer combo with the C300... It will be great not to have to sync in post :)

Actually, I was trying to do a test of that before the rain starting coming down. So I only got the first part tested.

Basically the test was to see how the sound was with an on-camera mic from six feet away. First I tested the on-camera mic. Then I tested a rode ntg-3 directly into the xlr input on the handle. Then I was going to run it through my high end preamp (which I have a unique take on that I won't delve into in this post) into the rode ntg-3.

From my tests I can say that the on-camera mic had a high noise floor. I wouldn't consider using it unless I had no other options available. I really like the sound coming out of the rode ntg-3 directly into the camera though. It seemed totaly usuable to me, and that was without me taking the sound into cubase and doing any processing/cleanup on it. I'm sure with all the compressors and plugins I have I can make it much better. I'm anxious to try my high end preamp frankenbeast because I expect/hope for it to give me as good as feature film quality sound (assuming boom mic and proper techniques are utilized).

Make sure you post your results, I would be very interested in the "frankenbeast" you speak of!!... Definitely will be stepping up with my audio next year. I too use Cubase and I have a ton of pluggins, compressors and finishing tools like DSM and Flux etc, but I want clean going in so I can get great coming out, rather than utilising the tricks of software to create acceptable audio...

Yeah, I don't even want to talk about it yet until I make sure it is feasible and a big improvement. But i'll go into it on the test if it works out. I'll post the test when it's ready, but I have to start all over because otherwise things wouldn't match exactly.

Cool, look forward to it, and Matt; thanks for the link.. I'll check that out when I get home!!

I don't have any samples to post just yet, but let's just say after I received my C100 I returned my Marantz PMD 661 recorder. I found the preamps in the C100 to be almost the same, if not slightly better than the Marantz.

I'll still carry my Zoom's with me for odd situations but hooked up to a Sanken COS-11D, a Rode NTG-3, and my Sennheiser G3 wireless kit, I was very pleased with the C100 audio.
Coming from someone who started their video business with a HV30 and a Canon 7D, I can't tell you enough how amazing it is to have a camera with the preamps and audio features that the C100 has. I love it.
I'm producing a feature length doc this year, and I got the C100 just in time, it's going to make things worlds easier.

My only complaint about the C100 audio, is that i've found while adjusting the levels on the handle, it's difficult not to shake the camera slightly, so while recording I'm not sure if it's entirely practical to be changing levels but I haven't really tested this.

Has anyone tested how wide a lens you can use before a camera mounted mic such as the NTG3 starts appearing in the frame? Would be particularly interested if you have tested with a Rycote or similar wind filter.

Using a Canon 24mm L with the NTG-3 as far forward in the mount as it will go with a WS7 wind shield it is just out of frame, but it was drooping a little, it could be adjusted better. 24mm is the widest I have to test.
