C100 Announcement Tomorrow (probably)

And the plot thickens...

I adore the c300. Wish this shot to a better codec and was about $1K cheaper, but this definitely piqued my interest.

I can't see who would buy this over a FS100 or FS700? A Canon DSLR shooter with loads of glass and deep pockets.

Will the AVCHD be as good as Sony's? It will have to go some. CLog in 8 bit AVCHD yeah right, just marketing BS for the uneducated or naive. Anyone saying AVCHD is a DSLR codec hasn't used Sony's implementation, it grades impeccably well and you have to keep reminding yourself the footage is compressed. Sony's AVCHD is no Canon DSLR H264 blockfest so it'll be interesting to see how Canon's version compares.

The C100 is too little too late for too much but then that's Canon video dept of the last 15 years.

I agree completely. If they had made it 50mbit 4:2:2, that would be one thing, but they leave it at 24mbit and 4:2:0. Hopefully they will come out with an upgrade rather quickly.

I think this looks like a nice camera. Yep on paper it is an FS100 with ND.

Really it comes down to ergonomics and feel.

Im not saying its better or worse, and actually I dont think that will be known until it is in the hand.

IMO none of the manufactuers have really understood S35 where IMO sustaining focus is the critical issue.

Id like to see a focus check solution that does not involve hunting around with your fingers while your eye is to the finder.

What I like about Stills DSLRs - the good ones - (D3, 1Dxxx) is that you can operate them with your eye on the job - looking at the image.

This is even more critical in video where a take is easily disrupted by even the most minor bump to the camera.

Agreed.

The next step in large sensor camera usability development has got to be to harness some of the amazing stills camera focus technology but tuned to video work. The FS700's focus assist is a good step but needs more work. We're told 4K is here yet we cannot reliably focus at 1080p as a single operator (which many of us are/were)! Madness I tell yer.

I don't know what the C300 and this C100 offer in terms of operator assists is suspect not much beyond the usual peaking and mag. New AF functions for 2013!

The Canon build quality will be good and 2 SD slots is great. What frame rates will the C100 support, full res 50/60p (nope just 50/60i) like the FS100? Nothing like the FS700's high speed recording I presume?

You know I stepped back and thought about this.

I would be excited if this was the price of the C500

It seems to me that the cameras are all the same, just they blank out a few sockets, and charge $20g to give em back to you

Id pay 2X BMC money for a C500

I don't know who buys those £20k cameras, dentists and the fool hardy maybe.

I hope the BMC is a massive success and forces a new price point for video gear. Glad I didn't buy a C300!

People who used to buy £80g cameras.

I mean £20g is not actually that much, my business paid the loan on a £15g Hassy without noticing.

Cost 1/3 on what I spent on secretary in the same period and I wont get much for her on e-bay

If this was 50mbit 4:2:2 I'd buy it without hesitation. With this codec, it's basically the hobbyist XA10 camcorder in a pro-body with a better sensor is it not?

!
For professionals who shoot regularly £20k isn't a that big an outlay. It wasn't long ago that an average pro shooter would drop more than that on a single ENG lens.

Presumably this is included so that you can record C-Log to an external recorder if you desire via the uncompressed HDMI terminal. It's actually a surprisingly welcome feature at the price point. If you want the best IQ recorded onto cards, I'd think that the new Wide Dynamic Range gamma is built to work nicely in the AVCHD compression.

AVCHD? come on, I'll stick with the blackmagic cam for now

Let's wait until we see some footage before judging the C100. AVCHD can look very good. We know The C100 has a great sensor and will have superb low-light capability and decent dynamic range. We also know there is vast range of lenses that will work brilliantly with it. The BMC camera has its good points, price-point and RAW being the big ones, but it has its weaknesses too - good luck to any one trying to find wide lens, let alone a super wide that resolves enough detail on the BMC camera to fully take advantage of all those photo-sites...

Absolutely but - today he may have to compete against someone who has not got that overhead.

In the past everyone had dropped 20G on a lens..
