Bye bye Karma GoPro. You had no chance.

I keep seeing the P3 on Amazon for like, $450.00! That seems really inexpensive but I know there a few models of P3 so maybe that's for the less desirable variant? This would be my first drone so all of the auto features seem really important for me but if I already was a fluent pilot, seems like P3 would be a pretty good deal these days?

That, and the P3 Pro has been in the hands of consumers for some time now too so it is a proven platform. The Mavic promises a lot and I hope that it delivers but we shall see soon.

It's hard to not get swept up in all of the excitement and hype but I am waiting until a few thousand of them get into the hands of users and we begin seeing a lot more footage and hearing about some more of the gotchas. I bet there might be some good deals and new accessories after the holdays. I don't see anything else better coming along soon but I am tired of being an early adopter. I was on the GH4 and regretted it and I have been on the ground floor on other gear and regretted it. Going to kick back, watch and wait a bit.

If you're not in a rush that is definitely a wise choice! There are almost always some bugs with brand new products.

I have to look at it in context. I am not going to become a certified pilot. If need aerials for work projects (unlikely but possible) I will hire someone talented with the certs, insurance and skills. So for me, the Mavic will be a toy. A lot of fun and I may use some stock footage type shots I shoot in projects but mainly, it is to just experience drone shooting and to have fun and be creative. So in my situation, I can afford to wait a little while.

As one really can't use an ipad with the Mavic will a smartphone be able to provide a good enough view of what's being shot? I don't think it worked to well with the Phantom drone and my Galaxy S6 especially fighting broad daylight.

I've been using my iPhone with the Osmo, I think it will be workable, although having a larger phone will be a plus, I have the relatively small screened iPhone 5S. I don't like that there is not yet a sunshade/hood, that will be needed. If you turn up your phone's brightness all of the way, you are just sucking down the battery quicker too. I bet there will be a sunshade soon though, all of the accesory makers are taking note that the Mavic is the hottest drone on the market and will sell a boatload so if they come out with a good hood, they will sell a lot of those too.

You can use an iPad with Mavic. Why couldn't you?

Prices crash all the time. Last year I was in the long waitlist for the 3DR Solo and got it in September. The Solo was 1000 USD + gimbal 400 ie 1400 total. That is now available at 490 USD in B&H . Fortunately, I could use it with a Go Pro 4 Black and recovered the money in one project. If you have a Go Pro, then that is the cheapest copter at great value for money. I am sure by next year, the prices of all the copters will drop even further down. So buy when you need it.

I feel a regular 5 inch phone becomes tough if you are shooting in bright light. An ipad with its bigger screen will be much better if you can use it. The question is can you attach an ipad with the Mavic Pro? From the images, I don't see much of space to attach the ipad. There doesn't appear to be any ipad holder like the ones we see used with 3DR Solo. With the Karma obviously, you can give the ipad to the second shooter/producer.

Even with an ipad and hood it can be difficult to judge how the footage will come out. I see an ipad to be totally wrong for the Mavic as the small form factor of both the drone and controller is key.

I'm guessing it would only work in wifi mode as the controller doesn't fit an iPad.
The controller has a USB port as well as the lighting connection built into the controller. You just won't be able to "hold" the iPad in the controller. But you can mount the controller on a stand or something. But you WILL be able to use an iPad.

I will never have an Apple device of any sort, but this is what a guy from DJI said on their forum.

"A list of devices is not up on the website yet, so keep an eye out for it. But I'd say a Android device with at least 2gb of RAM may work."

It should be pointed out that you don't need a controller to fly the Mavic. You can just do it from the DJI app, though I don't know what kind of flyability that gets you.

Without the controller, you get very little range, really just a few feet. The controller uses a different wireless system than your phone, that's what gets you the increased range.

That's fair, though the rated distance is 80 meters in wireless mode, which isn't bad for simple jobs.
