Bye bye Karma GoPro. You had no chance.

They both have their plusses.
DJI
+Proven to fly great. Orbit and Follow mode
+Way smaller then the Karma

Karma
+Cost less money
+Cool gimbal

And I like the GoPro image better.
I tend to go for the Karma because of the gimbal.
Since I like to do a lot of action-sports it is a cool all in one solution. It is ideal for obsacle runs and skate, bmx events.
But the size of the Mavric draws me to that. But then I need my Beholder or Ronin on the side, or need to buy an osmo.

These are nice for many applications, and the innovations are moving nice and quick.

I just wish I was someone who could benefit from this type of footage, but so far the minimum image quality I've been able to "sell" into my jobs is a Blackmagic Pocket camera on a $3,000 DJI octo-copter. So I just rent them when I need them.

The movements these tiny new cheap drones can do is amazing for the size and price, but the image quality just isn't something I can work with yet.

Isn't it interesting and a bit funny that most authorities say you must fly within sight and yet these drones goes many kilometres away and clearly out of sight? Not to mention 500 meters up!

I'm wondering if the small Mavic could have issues with stability in windy conditions due to it's small form factor compared to the P4 and Karma.

Wall Street wanted a sub $1K drone. They got it. I also hire for production gigs but these portable drones are profit makers. I want the Mavic for my Vlog and web stuff. Adding that extra angle is great and not having to carry a huge case on top of the camera gear makes it doable.

Another plus with at least Mavic is apparently it's not as loud as the P4 so you won't annoy people with it as much.

I've never even been around when "any" drone is flying, is it worth taking into consideration how loud they are, or are they all pretty much the same?

The portability alone makes it useful for me and as Erik said just adding a lil something extra/element to some of my shots.

Seems that the image quality from the Mavic camera isn't quite as good as from the Phantom 4:

There's a comparison of both about 8:30 in.

This ^^^^

I have now seen two video reviews from Mavic that show that the images are just not very good, at least so far. Hopefully this is just an error with the prototypes DJI sent out for reviews but the image is soft and mushy. The P4 footage is a known commodity and looks passable for a lot of pro use. I was going to order a Mavic but I am now reserving judgement until it gets into the hands of some video-centric reviewers who will shoot tests. Small and light are huge pluses but if the image sucks, whats the point? If the video turns out to be that bad, I will still buy a P4. More hassle to lug it but at least the footage can look pretty nice.

After looking into it more I cancelled my pre-order I will wait till more footy comes out. I don't really need it anyway until the end of November

The Mavic Pro seems to have a lousy camera. I don't care for looks or tiny size only. Quality of footage is far more important and the footage from Mavic reviews clearly say that this drone is not for us. However, you have to admit that the hype generated by DJI is huge and will hurt the sales of the Karma among enthusiasts.

On the other hand, the footage from the Go Pro 5 Black looks better than the Go Pro 4 Black. Interestingly, I hear that there is a 4K 8 bit HDMI out from the Hero 5 Black, though that is not of use for drone but for other work.

It's not you. I watched the Casey Neistat footage this morning and it is distinctly soft and mushy. It looks like soft, slightly out of focus 720p footage, not crisp 1080, which is not good for the hot new drone. I see plenty of 1080 footage all over YouTube that looks sharper and better so it's not the crappy YouTube compression engine. I am glad I didn't succumb to the hype and order one. The drone is quite an achievement but the camera seems like it needs some tweaking, either the lens or DSP. I don't think it's the sensor, it's supposedly the same sensor that the P4 has and P4 footage can look glorious with the right lighting and angles. It would be better for DJI to go back and fix this than to ship the Mavic with subpar images. A shipping delay, to a point, can be forgiven but selling a product that is touted for it's video ability and having the video look this bad is not good for a company's reputation. Maybe Go Pro will have the last laugh with the Karma. General reports are the Go Pro Hero 5 looks better than all of our Hero 4s, which isn't saying much, but let's wait and see.

I am hoping this is just bad video from prototypes. If you click on this DJI uploaded video and watch it in 4k here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1d_ptE6yrc I am not seeing the softness or mushiness that I saw the Casey Neistat and Digital Rev clips. It's not unheard of for a working prototype to have some issues that are ironed out by release. We know that he ones used by Neistat and Digital Revs are prototypes but we also know that the footage from the DJI clip i linked to here is also from a prototype and probably shot a few months ago. So it'a hard to know exactly what the Mavic will have for picture quality until new, released units are tested. I will be watching closely. I want to love the Mavic but without good images, that's not possible.

I just learned the camera on the Mavic isn't set at infinity like a GoPro. You have to manually focus by tapping the screen of the smartphone on the area you want to focus. This is going to cause a lot of soft samples in the wild with early testers. The advantage of this is to be able to get crisp focus on subjects that are closer. Maybe DJI needs to have a panoramic mode for those sweeping landscape flyovers to avoid soft images.

Here is good sample that you can download. Looks really good to me.
