F55: Buying the F55 with about $80,000 in hands.

I know a guy who bought an F65. Amazing camera, maybe the best on the market... but the rental market has been brutal for him. Who knows why, the camera just didn't catch on like he thought it would. You can't predict what will be a hot camera. The Alexa when it first came out was considered by many to be < Red One. How wrong did that turn out to be?

Op already made his decision.....

Buy some lighting and grip gear for around 15k and you will be able to do EVERYTHING you ever wanted......

Most importantly you can continue to rent out your Sony Fs700 and work a little less in the restaurant. Heck why not buy a new DSLR just to keep practicing your craft while your at it.
Also stay motivated and keep creating content, your eye is more important than any camera at the fs700 is a beast!

Thanks you all. Gonna hold to my $ and I will spend about 20K on my FS700 and the rest will go into a saving account. Enjoy your F5 or F55

This is me having fun still with my FS700.

Good choice! Putting all of your money into the latest greatest camera for rental would have been tough, esp when the next latest and greatest is always right around the corner these days. Make money with the FS700 and keep shooting. ;)

True, but at least give it a chance - it did just come out after all ;)
In reality for the OP to invest in any camera system right now ( at least for $80k ) is probably a very bad idea. I have bought a f55 but I also shoot commercials every week and have relationships with local rental houses. Even with that, I need to have the camera make $4000 a month in order to pay it off within a year. I am confident that I can do that but for someone starting out, I would say not a chance.

but the thing is, the F55 will NEVER and mark my words NEVER take over or switch any production from using Alexas. Just a different ball game. Productions using Arri gear do so because they are used to their products from the film world. They aren't going to "step down" to F55.

When the Alexa was released it was already being used on a bunch of high profile productions. The F55 ... well I dont see anyone or any major motion picture shooting with these at all. It just doesn't have the reputation that Arri will have.

I know he already made is choice but I just wanted to make that point, Arri is in a different bracket of users and companies. The big boys use Alexa for everything. The F65, not doing so well either, its got some block busters coming out this summer shot with it, but theres 0 hype and talk about that camera in an industry flooded with Alexas.

And after any Alexa talk out there, it is followed by RED talk. I too don't see the F5/F55 taking anything over (and I actually own one). It doesn't mean that the F55 isn't a good camera, Sony was just too friggin late, messed up with the F3, and frankly quite expensive for what else is out there shooting 4k RAW.

We'll see, the lower rental cost and global shutter on the F55 could make an impact - but post-houses are so comfortable and happy with 12-bit ProRes4444 out of the Alexa (not to mention the pretty pictures it makes). I think any new camera/workflow is a hard sell at the moment.

Exactly, pretty much the only reason I jumped on the RED band wagon, it paid off too. Sometimes you just need to follow the trends and be smart about things and understand trends in this industry, and where the money is really at.
