Buying a NTG-2, advice on kits

Hey guys. I'm going to order a NTG-2 tonight so I can get it hopefully by Thursday. The two kits I was looking at on BH are:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/481528-REG/Rode__NTG_2_Condenser_Shotgun_Microphone.html

which comes with

  • Rode NTG-2 Shotgun Microphone
  • Shockmount
  • Pearston LMT100 Line Matching Cable
and

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/400806-REG/Rode__NTG_2_Battery_or_Phantom.html

  • Includes NTG-2 Shotgun Microphone
  • SM3 Shock Mount
  • 1.5 Foot Right Angled XLR Cable
They're both $269 which are priced very well considering just the mic itself on Amazon is $260. Is the SM3 shock mount good or would I need to replace it? Of the two, I'm leaning toward the 2nd kit because I don't really know what the line matching cable does (reading about it, I don't think I'll have use for it).

I have a Panasonic HMC40 with the XLR adapter. Any recommendations on a good windshield, xlr cables? I'm trying to save money, but if all of the stuff that comes with this kit is good, what do you say?

Thanks a lot

The line matching cable is an XLR->1/8" cable with a couple bits of electronics in it to let you use an XLR mic with a consumer camera. So, the second kit will work better for you if you have XLR ins on your cam.

You might be better off calling DVCreators. They have this NTG-2 package which will do everything you need. And if you really don't need the pole, they are really good about customizing packages. And be sure to tell them that you're a DVXUser member.

As for the NTG-1 vs. NTG-2, go ahead and get the 2. The battery capability can be handy in a pinch.

I called DVCreators and ended up ordering the kit you listed. I forgot to mention I'm a DVXUser member, what good deals did I miss out on? Based on everything in the kit, is there anything else I need to get? Thanks

Don't know if they had anything right now... they have DVXUser deals from time to time. As for anything else, since you have XLR in via the adapter, you should be good to go with this kit.

But you do need good headphones. And you need to wear them as you record. Sony MDR-7506 is a good place to start, also available at DVCreators.

Call 'em back and let 'em know you came to them from DVXUser. I don't know the percentage but for me it's always been very signfigant. Well worth the time for a followup call, that's for sure! (And Guy's a good guy to work with)

Thanks for the heads up. I have the bose quiet comfort 3 noise canceling headphones right now.

Steve, is it a percentage off I get or a kickback to the website haha

Jared, I'm pretty stoked right now. This was the last of my purchases I needed to begin filming so I'm antsy for Thursday to come around so I can get to playing. The shockmount works fine for you?

NO.

Under no circumstances should you be using noise canceling phones when shooting. It's critical that you hear what you're recording, not what the circuit in the phones think you'd like to hear.

Second that!

And under no circumstances should you be using anything with the name "Bose" on it for professional audio monitoring.

The shock mount is pretty good, if you got the SM3 and not the SM4 (The SM4 is kind of loose and you cant lock it, thats the one I got).

But eventually you will want to upgrade, check out some of the K-Tek Shock Mounts w/ the K-SUS suspenders, those are sweet, like $80 on bhphoto

The Rode blimp is a much better upgrade.

The SM3 is quite good. I use it on a boom and on a camera. Also I use a version of it on a mic stand when recording plays. It helps reduce the sound of actors stomping around. It even holds a NT3 pretty well. Even an NT4 if you're not moving to much!

The DVStore discount is usually 5%. You write "take5" in the comments. Just call them and see if you can get it.

thanks guys. i'm bummed about the headphones. my brother bought them for my mom who didn't want them who gave them to me who didn't want them. i thought i'd finally have use for them but i guess not

yeah you want headphones that dont alter the sound at all, the sony ones are good because they are flat and dont have anything like a bass booster or noise cancellation
