C300: Buying a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM. New or used?

I want to buy a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM. After reading the last thread, "used Canon lens issue" I wonder if I should buy new or used. There is about a $300 price difference. What do people think? Is buying used worth the savings. Any other horror stories buying used?

how much is this lens gonna make for you ? can you make the money back from less than 3 shoots ? if so then go new, if not then go used only if you really want this lens so bad.

I recommend buying refurb by Canon. You save money plus you know it's been thoroughly checked. Better than new, imo.

Buy used if you can physically inspect the lens before buying. Else, pay the extra bit and buy new. Lenses depreciate less. So buying new makes sense. If you must buy used, then buy from a reputed place like B&H, if they have one in their used section.

Wow! 3 shoots. I must not be charging enough for my gear. The 24-105 Canon lens cost new around $1,150.00. I charge a rental fee based on the competitive rate at local rental houses in Toronto. For example I rent my 70-200 IS Canon for $150.00/week. Based on that rate it would take me 8 weeks of rental to pay off the new lenslens. Or more, cause the 70-200 is more expensive than the 24-105. I would have to charge less.

Maybe I should be buying used?

I feel a whole new thread coming on.

If rental is a consideration, a 24-105 rents for around $25 a day. You can buy new for $1050 and used for around $750. You could pay for a new lens in 40 rentals and a used lens in 30 rentals. Either way you'll probably pay it off in a year.
