hey im gonna buuy a dvx100 it looks great im gonna get it for 900 with some extras. but the only thing is im worried about the hours. it has a lil less than a thousand hours. is this a great deal. or should i keep looking:dankk2:

A thousand hours is a lot. Did they capture with it? And is it a 100a or 100b. $900 is pretty cheap. But I definitely would not consider it if it is a 100a.

its just the dvx100 also what is wrong with the dvx A. just wondering? and im not sure what capture is. but think he did

Hmmmm, what's wrong with the DVX100A ??? I have one, have had it for a year and have shot lots of documentary stuff and talking heads with it. Works fantastic but then again it doesn't have a thousand hours on it.:)

So tell us what's the problem with the 100A ? I'm curious.

Capturing with the camera means using the camera as the deck, connecting it to your computer and using the camera to upload (capture) footage to the computer. This puts lots & lots of needless wear and hours on the heads. Most people use either a cheaper mini dv camera as their capture deck or they spend some serious money on a dedicated deck. I only use my DVX to shoot with and use a small Canon mini dv camera as my deck to capture footage to the computer.

A thousand hours is a bunch...

Hope this helps.

Let me rephrase that, there is nothing wrong either the 100 or 100a. My problem with the 100 is that it doesn't have squeeze mode. So you can't shoot 16:9 (which is basically all I do). You can letterbox but I'm not a fan of that.

And I would choose the 100b over the 100a because of the improvements of the viewfinder.

By capturing I meant playing footage back in the tape deck and transferring it to your compute through firewire. Doing so puts extra wear on the camera's heads which is why people recommend having a cheap cam for doing this.

So I don't know, if you don't mind not having squeeze mode, I'm sure you'd like the 100. But to me, and it could just be me, $900 seems pretty steep for a 100 with that much use. I'd offer them like $700 maybe.

Given the hours I would say it is worth much less. Probably 750-900.

I agree with Warren, I personally wouldn't pay $900-$1,000 bucks for a 100 model with a thousand hours on the heads. I once read somewhere that the heads usually require rebuilding/maintenance at around 1500 hours I believe it was.

I'd keep looking unless this is an entry camera that will be used for a short period before going to HD, upgrading or if your budget is such that you just can't justify spending another $600-$1,000 on a newer camera with less hours. Again, just my personal opinion... I looked around and found my DVX100A with 19 hours on the heads and several accessories for $2,000.00 about a year ago. I thought that was a pretty good deal.

My DVX has over 1300 hours and it works fine. I took great care of my camera though. Lets hope the guys selling you that camera took good care of it.

Okay, there is a way to use the DVX100 series camcorcorders without putting any wear on the heads. You can connect a cheap camera as a slave unit to the DVX so that all of the wear is on the slave. There is no loss of quality and all the data flags from the DVX are recorded onto the tape the same as if the tape was in the DVX. That is one of three ways a slave can be used with a DVX100 series camera.

Here's how to do it:

i never acuattly heard of that. but seems legit to me.
is it okay to use the same slave as a deck? making it a multipurpose camcorder

Yeah. You can use the same camera as a slave and as a deck for capturing your footage. That way you can reduce or eliminate wear on the DVX heads.

Cool... Never thought of that. Unfortunately this set up probably wouldn't work well if you're shooting run & gun documentary stuff... :)

What I did was buy one of those "fanny packs" with a belt. I put my little MiniDV camcorder in the fanny pack and connect it to my DVX100B with a 6 ft. Firewire cable. I just have to be careful not to get the cable caught on anything as I move around.

Fanny packs are possibly the stupidest looking things on earth.
