The Korean movie Burning (2018) won a bunch of awards and is a critical hit - and I have to agree with all the accolades; this is one of the best movies I’ve seen in quite a while.

Technically very well done, and the music is excellent (which is very rare, unfortunatelly). But really everything about this movie is fantastic, from the story to the acting.

It represents a maturing of Korean cinema. There were shades of this maturing process already in Parasite, but here it is in full bloom. The psychological depth here is finally on par with the best of world cinema.

Highly recommended.
 
I actually liked it much, much better than Parasite. I know people love Parasite, but I can never get into the crazy, stylized acting that Bong Joon-ho often seems to ask from his actors.

I felt the whole class conflict worked better with more naturalistic approach (if not necessarily realistic representation of the rich, which in my experience are more like the Parasite characters).


Don't get me started on Okja.
 
Agreed, I liked Burning much more too, and it’s a much better movie. Parasite wasn’t bad, but it had a serious third act problem, it got progressively worse and it felt like the director didn’t know how to end the movie - very strong first act, good second act and poor third act... the story of quite a few films! Burning on the other hand had a spectacular third act, and it ended super, super strong.
 
Burning has been on my list for a while... but the runtime keeps making us put it off.
Maybe I'll finally get around to it now.

To this day I'm scrubbing off with kerosene my viewing of Parasite. Burning... never heard of. The trailer looks interesting.
