Hmm, cool. I shot some photos of those guys years ago for a magazine piece about the plant. Based on this nice little mini-doc it seems like an intense work environment, though. Yikes! heh

Thanks for sharing.

Hmm must be nice to have time for a 30 minute camera build on a doc... :P

Couldn't agree more. My camera case is now unused because I have to build the camera rig up at home and walk into the shoot with the camera ready to go if I want to have any time to light and check sound. Kind of sucks having to have a tall, pre-built rig flying around the interior of my car but I never have time to assemble at the shoot anymore it seems.

Same here...but mine is quite secured. I bolted a quick released in the back of my van so the camera stays secure between locations.

Doesn't mean that it can't be shot with a 16 000$ camera either.

I think his point is as a Canon sponsored showcase of the C300II they should have shown shots that set the camera apart from much cheaper options.

It looks good don't get me wrong.

See your point. But let's not forget that the C300 II is (and will be use) used on many documentaries and corporate videos.

So many things on the BTS just look bad. The cameras are covered with all the clobber that Im desperat to shed? All the fookin leads get tangled up ripped off and a world of expensive repairs as soon as you are not in a record shop.

Lokit Box? you telling me the TC drifts?

He can work with a camera all day like that? Hmm Im a pretty big lad and such rigs are killers.

The footage just looks a bit wooden and half graded.

His handheld shots are not stable.

Now there are times Im sure a C300ii is completely (amera and FS7) killer.. doing a doco on a sprinter? let us see that AF roar?

12bit..? let us see a proper grade of a wide DR situation

And three of them.. !

S

Can't agree with you guys more, camera must be nimble and ready to fly.
Keeping it light means I don't need an easy-rig and prevents me from feeling fatigued.

Overall I'm satisfied with the camera, if only it had FS7 or Amira frame-rates.

Puredrifting, what you need is my Coffin! I piece the rig together the previous night and it's my quick run case. Otherwise, if I slam on my brakes the baby gets hurt. I don't like to use my passenger seat for it. I feel that in today's competitive environment my clients really like seeing me arrive ready to roll, literally.

But...my problem with that BTS video is, I know what these feature length documentaries are paying for rates since I get their requests, and Cartelland (which would be a really stupid gig to accept) was made on Sundance grant money. So, unless he's doing spots I don't see how someone, especially his age, could possibly afford all these do-dads? The lens is $30K. It's like watching a house rehab on HGTV, you want to know how much it cost and where did these kids get that kind of money? Maybe he has no wife holding back his purchases or kids to save for their college education? Hope he maxed out his IRA.

There gets to be a point where a DP buys so much gear there is no way in Hell there could be what we call profit left over.

Just because you were offered some rates on what were likely lower budgets docs doesn't mean there aren't higher rates out there on higher budget docs.

This is what I could find of budgets from the last few years of Academy Award nominated docs.

Amy: $3.4 million
The Salt of the Earth: $3.6 million
Finding Vivian Maier: $105,042
The Square: $1.5 million
The Act of Killing: $1 million
20 Feet from Stardom: $1 million

I see the Arri Amira getting used on various docs and that's a considerably more expensive setup. F55 as well. The Amira with a Canon 17-120 or Cabrio 19-90 is way better ergonomically than the mess of cables and pieces that results from the C300 Mark II being made to do the same. I think the C300 Mark II's ergonomics shine when you keep it small for monopod, slider, Steadicam, cradle handheld or shorter time handheld, etc. Once you rig it out with a large servo zoom lens and shoulder mount setup, its ergonomics become inferior to cameras like the F55 and Arri Amira.
