Broke the AF100.

Ahh... On a job right now shooting mainly with my ZF's and a voigtlander adapter, however i've got a cheap EOS mount with me & my Tokina 11-16 EF mount, and at the time, I had the wide lens on the camera.

So, I went to rewhite balance and black balance, and the screen all of a sudden went green. I re black balanced again and then the entire screen went fully white.. power down, battery off, remove lens etc etc. Back on, still white. Black balance, back to normal. Flick up to another ISO setting, goes green again. WTF.

Power off again, give the camera a couple minutes, put my Voigtlander/ZF 21 back on. Everythings good. Finish shooting for the day. Back at the hotel now, put the Tokina EF back on. No problems.

So.. any ideas? it definitely had something to do with Black Balancing..

I'll send the camera to Panny NZ when im back home next week. Running firmware 1.15 BTW. Cameras a week old.

Just guessing ..when using the cheap EOS mount do you switch off the "lens check" in the menu other functions, sometimes I dont need to switch it off with my cheap Nikon adapter maybe that confused the camera brain.

Joe I had the same problem, black balanced and the screen went white. I was using an Olympus 16-52. No response from Panasonic, this must be a new thing.
I wish they had the opportunity to test some Olympus, Panasonic , etc. 4/3 & M 4/3 lenses.
Here was my post several weeks ago.

"OK, here I go:
I changed the Gain on the camera from 200ASA to 400ASA,
No problems, did the recommended black balance, when picture came
back, the blacks were crushed. Had to go with it.
Redid the black balance again, the screen went white. Checked
Iris, lens, auto everything, nothing.
Redid the black balance again, it went back to normal.
I am noticing on my viewfinder screen it says, " Cine D", I went into the
menu and changed it to B.Press. The image is back to normal, Cine D is still on the screen. I do not remember if B. Press was on the screen.
Also I cannot recreate this at this point.
I do have the current update.
Any help would be appreciated. "

James, didn't see your earlier post, But is your camera working now?

And for both of you, what was the operating arena like, outside? inside? temperature? humidity? operating for how long? just turned on?

More details please.

Thanks,

Jan

James, sounds like exactly what happened to me, during the 2nd to last black balance i did I ended up with a very crushed image before another BB fixed it.

Jan, I was shooting shooting inside a retail store at the time, it was probably 60 in the store, and 48 or so outside. I had shot an external wide of the store outside when I arrived and then gone inside with the camera to start shooting. Although I managed to shoot for about an hour in the store before this problem happened.

cheers.

What are the temperature ranges the camera should be able to operate in? Like if I was to go to mexico to shoot a short, would I have serious problems!?It's a tad worrying..

interesting. my camera is going to panasonic on monday for a number of reasons.

whoops. destroyed the voigtlander mount as well.. somehow my ZF is fine though! Tripod leg slipped.. camera hit the ground from about 1.5m up.

Had an issue with the AF100 today in NYC during a shoot. Not the green screen, but something different. I just recently (2 weeks) got the AF100 as a replacement for one of our HVX200s and Canon 7D. I bought it for the DOF, low light capability, and sharp image. The Canon 7D gives me some of this ability, but has it's many issues, one being it overheats pretty quickly in warm weather.

Was doing a shoot today in Bryant Park at high noon. I would say it's in the mid to high 80s and very humid...sun & clouds. We are doing interviews on a tripod with a Class 10 SD card and a Ninja with a 120GB SSD hard drive and the Lumix 14-140 lens. This is first time I'm using the camera on a live job and have practiced with it for about 12 hours of shooting and felt pretty comfortable with it using the Lumix lens. But just in case, we brought a HVX200 as a backup. About an hour into the shoot, we start another interview and a cloud comes by so I double check the exposure with the waveform monitor and when I push the waveform button, nothing happens...I look at the recording icon and it has stopped recording. I hit the record button repeatedly and nothing happens. I didn't try any other of the buttons, but the record and waveform button were disabled. The Ninja stayed recording thankfully so we finish the question and I power off and on the AF100. It came back to normal. The next 1/2 hour of shooting went without incident. Footage from the Ninja was fine so no real harm done.

My initial reaction is that maybe heat/humidity had a part in it freezing up on the controls and obviously one incident can't show a pattern. It was just disconcerting. My HVX200s (and DVX100s before that) were work horses that never failed me, no matter what the weather conditions were. I know I can rely on them. I want very much to feel the same way about the AF100 but obviously this first job out of the box has given me pause. Anyone else experience anything similar?

Hey Jan,
I was in Tenn. on my shoot. It was early in the morning around 7:30am, approx. 85 degrees at about 95% humidity. Camera was on for about 40 minutes and I had rolled for about 20 minutes.
I went to change ISO- then black balanced as recommended-screen went white. Capped the lens, still white.
I finally turned off the camera, screen was still white, reblack balanced things went back to normal.
Weird thing was I could record, my NANOFlash recorded a signal.
My trust level with this camera isn't as high as before, I still carry my HDX900 with me as well as a Canon 7D (I hope never to use!),
so my shoot was not in jeopardy, I was just a little embarrassed.

My cameras been at Panasonic NZ and the tech there replied to me with..

"I have not been able to duplicate the black balance fault. ABB is done by a mechanical shutter closing off the lens. I have been checking that it operates correctly."

When i spoke with him last he had spoken to Japan and they hadn't heard of the fault.

My suggestion is to anyone that has had a problem, even if it has stopped doing it, to contact Panaosnic service, and in the US that means either our LA office or Secaucus, NJ.

Thanks,

Jan

FYI, my camera is currently in Japan at Panasonic being checked out in regard to the Black Balance Issue. Will update when i know more.

I had the same problem last week when I went to record a concert.

Just turned the camera off for a minute or so, then white balanced and black balanced again and it returned to normal. Big sigh of relief, and all was O.K.

Hasn't happened since and used it three times since. Just one of those things I guess! "Computers!!!!"

Cheers,

Vaughan

Send it to panny.. not a chance in the world I am going to take my AF102 out on a paying gig until the problem is solved.
