Bringing HDV Footage Into An NLE (or what the hell are you using?)....

After seeing the beast in person, reading the manual cover to cover, noticing my incoming hire phone calls dropping off, and let's be honest - gear envy, I'm going to be upgrading to the XHA1 in the not too distant future. I'm wondering about a few things though, after using the DVX for years, and the XL1 for years prior, I always used a cheap DV cam (Optura Pi) to bring in my footage. I'm gathering that the cheapest similar option using HDV is about $1000, which raises a question for me - perhaps would that be better money spent on a Firestore for the A1, thus eliminating the need for a deck to bring in footage, but still providing the security that I felt was lacking, or simply too costly, vs. the HVX, meaning having two IDENTICAL copies, whereas all the HVX could offer was either a DV backup, or a more momentary backup (meaning you'd have to copy over the card). Shooting real time docs, this always gave me a weary feeling, and is what has kept me from the HVX. Would not getting a Firestore perhaps be the best way to deal with this bringing it into the system issue, and using the indentical tape backup as say, a backup?

Really this is a matter of choice and workflow. I own a Firestore FS-4 which I used with a DVX 100b. I now own a XH-A1 and currently I am just dumping the tape direct from the camera as I await the HV20.

I am lead to believe that I could upgrade to the FS-4 HDV with a firmware update even though the FS-C is specifically made for the Canon. I don't edit in FCP so I don't need M2T files recorded in .MOV format.

I am not even looking at say $1800 just a $295 firmware update. But the HV20 will not only work a s deck but also as a "B" roll camera with stealh capabilities. Who would think that a "little" camera like that would be HDV and look so good ( based on HV10 footage).

I have not been fond of Firestore support and I am actually leary of investing any more money in their products. However, other's claim to love the FS-C or FS-4 combination.

Pick your work style and preferences write down the pros and cons of each scenario and see what shows as a winner.

Good shooting,

S Cannon
