Brevis Footage

I shot my first Brevis Footage this weekend. Please let me know what you think.

I really like the system. It is easy to use and the setup time is minimal. The customer service is also good (and will be better when they have phone tech support -- which I think is coming soon).

The footage seems nearly as sharp as the stock lens. The limited depth of field is amazing. It's hard to do that with a stock lens on a bright day without zooming in a lot and stopping down the lens with lots of ND.

Using the Marshall monitor flipped upside down helped with framing and focusing.

The footage was shot with a 50mm Nikon lens I bought for $35.00.

For those of you that already own the Brevis, look over the footage and let me know if you think I am doing anything wrong.

The footage has not been color corrected or tweaked in any way. I used available light.

SORRY, I HAD TO TAKE THE VIDEO DOWN - TOO MANY HITS!!!

Feel free to check out the rest of the site, too!

That's one hell of a test! Looks great, I love the live music (nice, clean, consistent audio to boot), and a great location.

Thanks! My cousin is going to college for guitar/music. He's really good (IMHO). I just told him to crank up the amp. I did not have any XLR cables or a mic. The audio you hear is from the camera mic. I was impressed it sounded that clean.

The girl in the video is my brother's girlfriend. She is pregnant and looks great on camera.

It's nice to have family members to do testing on. I'm sick of shooting scenics! The limited depth of field really makes your subject pop.

That all looked great, well done. Only thing is to zoom in a touch on the ground glass to get rid of the slight vignetting. Real nice stuff and good luck with the adaptor.

Are you using cinefuse 1?

Excellent! Very nice shots. You're getting the hang of it.

That's really nice. I love how clean it looks. . .I like the idea of 35mm adapters, but alot of the stuff I have seen looks really soft which is not so much to my liking, personal opinion of course.

Fantastic first try! :)

I REPLIED IN CAPS BELOW...

THANKS. I WILL DO THAT. THE VIGNETTING DOESN'T SHOW UP ON A HDTV, JUST ON A COMPUTER FILE (IT'S CROPPED OUT ON A TV). WILL ZOOMING IN LITTLE MORE HURT THE IMAGE IN ANY WAY?

I THINK SO. I BOUGHT THE HD BUNDLE, SO I THINK IT CAME WITH IT. HOW WILL I KNOW FOR SURE IF I HAVE IT? I DID NOT HAVE TO INSTALL IT.

THANKS FOR THE KIND COMMENTS!

J, you do have the new imaging element CF1L installed in your unit...it's one of the options you selected during ordering.

There is no reason to zoom in more if your output is DVD as overscan will take care of the edges on the guitar shots. From what I can see, you've got the unit aligned nearly perfect and the slight vignette is because you're using an image width closer to 39mm. CF1L will allow you to use a FOV wider than the 24mm x 36mm SLR frame so as long as your lens is retaining corner sharpness with that FOV, and your output is DVD, it's a non-issue. Your HVX will have no problem with another 5% zoom when/if required. Were you using the in-cam ND filters or externals? If you try the same shot with your HVX and 35mm lens at approx f4, with a combination of ND filters to get there, the footage will get sharper yet.

Loved the feel of this clip. It looks like you have the unit perfectly sorted :-)

Thanks for the info, Dennis.

I think the slight vignette comes from a screw on ND filter I put in front of the 50mm lens.

It's good to know I can zoom in a little more if I need to do so.

Most of the time I was shooting with the 50mm lens opened all the way and the HVX200 at or around F4. That seemed to give the best results. I'm happy with the sharpness of the picture. Both the HVX200 and the Brevis seem to love lots of light.

The Brevis is a quality product, by the way.

i dont know much about 35mm adaptors, but very nice footage. do you have the brevis with the built in image flip function?

MY IMAGE IS UPSIDE DOWN. I HAVE TO FLIP IT IN POST. I USE THE MARSHALL PORTABLE MONITOR MOUNTED ON TOP OF MY CAMERA. I TURN IT UPSIDE DOWN IN ORDER TO VIEW THE IMAGE IN THE FIELD PROPERLY. I DO NOT KNOW ABOUT THE BUILT IN FLIP FUNCTION. IF THAT IS AVAILABLE, I WOULD LIKE TO GET IT. CAN ANYONE CONFIFRM THIS FUNCTION AND HOW IT IS USED?

Cinevate's Flip Module is not yet available.

Quick question, what MF and zoom do you have your HVX on? Thanks.

I DON'T RECALL. I DON'T GO BY NUMBERS, I JUST ZOOM IN UNTIL THE BREVIS/35MM LENS FILLS THE ENTIRE FRAME OF THE HVX 200'S LCD MONITOR. I THEN FOCUS THE HVX BY CLOSING DOWN THE 35MM LENS AND FOCUS ON THE GRAIN. THESE TWO METHODS GAVE GOOD RESULTS. I'M NOT SURE IF THERE ARE MAGIC ZOOM AND FOCUS NUMBERS TO USE. I THINK YOU NEED TO DO IT BY EYE. DENNIS?

I personally set back focus every time I attach the adapter using the best focus aids possible ... never by number.

Wow, that was really pretty. I liked the real slow pans and tilts, and the racking focus looked sweet. Can't wait to see a non-test!

What a test.

Finally, not somebody just running around handheld (although I appreciate that too).

Very nicely done. Thanks for sharing.

Also, your cousin is very good and your brothers girlfriend has a very appealing look and the setting was beautiful.
