Brackendale WIP

Re: Brackendale WIP

nice job djecta - thought the beginning was the beginnig of a suspense film and like john said you nailed it with the truck passing by!

Re: Brackendale WIP

excellent work D...as always. love the train stuff.

question...how are you compressing for the web? are you using sorenson squeeze? there looks to be some wierd aliasing issues on some of the shots.

Re: Brackendale WIP

Yeah, I noticed that...definitely not in the original. I'm using Sorenson....I'll have to figure it out. The train tracks really show the problem

Re: Brackendale WIP

Disjecta,

Not to sound cliche but it was an organic journey to Neverland for me.

I've seen few professionals able to breath so much character out of a place.

Your skills are honed. If you ever want to shoot a film in New York let me know. If I'm not working on a project I can get you any large a project you would need for the Graduate film program here. These films are $25,000 budget on average for a smaller scale production- I still can't believe the work you do! :D

The compositions were all incredible as well as very engaging and invisible camera moves. You are able to be very critical about your shots (as you've expllained) and it shows! Your experience shows too!

That's an important lesson guys. Treat the Dv tape as film and plan shots and make them count. Not only for editing but then it forces you to think and come up with better shots. That's not to say that one should skip coverage, but you know what I'm saying.

Disjecta, again, thanks for quieting my chi in this mad mad world. ;D

Re: Brackendale WIP

Entercable, you are very gracious, I thank you very much.

Rich, I figured you meant Sorenson Squeeze. That's what I'm using. I just upgraded to version 4. I'll need to revisit the settings again and figure out what's happening. It seems like it's turning progressive frames into interlaced frames....very weird. I didn't notice this in my other films....I thought I was using the same settings.

Anyway, I'll check it out.

Re: Brackendale WIP

ah, yes, sorenson squeeze...i think i know what the problem is, cause i had it as well for a while.

sorenson does a shitty job at taking 720x480 (nonsquare) footage and turning it into 720x540 (square) footage. if you feed it 720x480 footage, it wants to square it up, and it doesnt do it correctly, which introduces aliasing. Use after effects or something like it to square up your image before bringing into sorenson.

is the footage your feeding it dv .9 pixel aspect ratio?

Re: Brackendale WIP

Okay Rich, thanks for the info, I'll try it. Hey I like your very poetic avatar tagline 8)

Re: Brackendale WIP

Nothing more to add !! All is said. Just Bravo.

ps : I'm waiting with impatience your first fiction opus.
Your opening sequence is great. Our imagination start to work just after few seconds :
- Where are they going ?
- Why are they driving in the night ?
- Is there a wounded dwarf beside the driver ?

Thank you.

Here's the answer to your questions:
1. Brackendale
2. Because we couldn't get our act together to leave earlier :D
3. No but if you look very closely at the top right of the screen, every now and again you will see a pack of Camel cigarettes lighting up as the exterior lights illuminate the dashboard 8)

I know you are actually referring to the imagined story these images convey....and, yes, it may become the opening to a future drama....you'll just have to wait and see.

As Dali said : I'll wait without impatience in liquid nitrogen ! ;D

Henri Miller in Sexus wrote wonderful pages about the true artist.
If I remember, he said that a true artist is able to send back the reader to his own imaginary. You did it.

I think for the filmmaker it's the same thing but perhaps you have more control on the process. Scorcese, did it very well in Goodfellas. He catch the viewer in the first seconds and you follow him until the end.

Re: Brackendale WIP

Hey Disjecta...I had exactly that same interlace thing going on with train tracks and Sorenson. Please post if you figure it out :)

Re: Brackendale WIP

That was great Disjecta. Did you get any shots while on the lionsgate bridge? It seems like your moveing south in the title sequence, did you shoot that on your way home? :)

Re: Brackendale WIP

You are a smart man, Chayse....yes I was moving South.

I passed over the Lion's Gate bridge and really wanted to take some shots but traffic was bad on the way back and on the way there, all my gear was packed away tight... I'll be back.

Hehe. Good to hear.

Re: Brackendale WIP

I can't remember if I posted my praises yet, so I'll just do it again...
I loved it, man...I loved it. The intro reminded me of David Lynch a little. Very effective...You'd be a great oscar-calibre go-to guy for second unit location shooting, man. Beautiful shots. You know how to make a lady out of the DVX...
she's still a strumpet with me :-/ .
Maybe familiarity breeds contempt, but not much of my stuff looks like the 24p that seduced me into buying the camera...that train was made for a dvx lens!
I've gotta shoot more!

Re: Brackendale WIP

Thanks Hillcity, I appreciate it.

Rich and Mino, I figured out the problem with the aliasing. I used the letterbox crop in Sorenson Squeeze and "deinterlace" is on by default. As soon as I unchecked that, the problem went away.

I've uploaded the new file.

Whew, that was pissing me off. 8)

Re: Brackendale WIP

Disjecta, I am downloading it as we type. (I have dial-up so it's going to be a long night.)

First things first, it looks as though there's thin black bars at the top and bottom of the frame. Why is that?  Also, you said you used the letterbox crop in Sorrenson Squeeze. Is that how you got the 16:9 output or did you use PhotoZoom Pro again, as explained in your tutorial last month? Just curious how you got the 16:9 output.

With that out of the way, ...WOW!!! Incredible piece of work. And I can't really say anything that others haven't already said, so I'll stop typing now. I'm going to watch it again and study it.
