Brackendale WIP

disjecta

Lucky Duck
Okay, I've been quite busy filming recently. I took a trip to Brackendale via Vancouver over the Thanksgiving weekend and took my trusty DVX along. Brackendale has one of the largest concentrations of bald eagles in the world although the day I saw most of them, it was raining so hard, I wasn't able to shoot.

So, this piece is going to be about 10 minutes long when it's finished. The eagle shots I got (not that many) will be in a future segment, so don't expect to see any....except maybe one shot.

The trip to Canada from Seattle was about 5 hours and it was quite boring because we (my wife and I) drove at night. The opening sequence of this film represents snippets from this trip. Warning, it is not typical Disjecta stuff...I decided to be a little experimental and have fun with the opening sequence. It was shot out the window of my car (my wife was driving) and the camera was set at 30P with 1/4 shutter speed. It was then imported into a 24p timeline which slowed it down somewhat. The vibe is quite hypnotic and perhaps a little ominous.

The second part of this film was basically the first day we spent in Brackendale. I have included some human elements in this piece, again, unusual for Disjecta :D

And yes, I know the beginning doesn't necessarily fit with the rest of the film but it's just a self-indulgence on my part so I don't care. It totally reminds me of the long trip :D

I still have to do some work on it, like some color correction here and there and maybe swap some footage, not sure yet but, as usual, I wanted to share it with you guys (and gals),,,

Re: Brackendale WIP

The first time we see the river with the mountains... wow! That was gorgeous. Another great choice in music...

And watch out for that train :)

Re: Brackendale WIP

Hey did you meet Mr. Bald Eagle guy? He is the man who organizes the annual blad eagle count, and also owns the tea shop. I used to live in BD, and it is going to be an amazing transformations for that sleepy area when the Olympic bandwagon shows up. great vid, made me miss the place.

Re: Brackendale WIP

i loved it, that first scene of the river and the mountains, like stated before, incredilble

Re: Brackendale WIP

Disjecta,
Wowsers!
I think panasonic should hire you to shoot their commercials.
The last scene of the frost covered leaf combined with the music is simply chilling. I went scampering off to find a thick sweater and warm socks.
In the second part I do see a very narrow band all across the screen slightly below the very top. Could be I'm the only one that has this problem. The first part is fine.

Re: Brackendale WIP

Disjecta, I just want you to know that whenever i see a link to your footage, i just save it instantly! No need to watch it first to make sure its worth taking up my hard drive space ;). Heck I even have a nice little section on my harddrive just for your movies. Keep it coming please.

Re: Brackendale WIP

Nice, nice, nice, nice, nice. I'm obviously going to have to make my wife drive from now on. Or learn to shoot while driving a stick shift. Hmmm. Again, gorgeous.

Re: Brackendale WIP

Everysingle time the Steven gets behind the damn lens something magical happens. I dont even have to watch Discovery or PBS anymore; I've got these watch.

From the opening titles; that felt so urban contemporary to the lovely imagery. Your compositions have always been uber style but this one tops the previous ones for me. Opening with the pay phone, the train tracks, the floating through the trees and the patented "disjecta tripod tilt".

Wow. I love your work and always know Im getting something cool and good for my mind. My favorite shot was of the little house dwarfed by the two clusters of trees; beautiful.

This felt very cinematic in nature. I cant wait for a narrative piece from you.

Re: Brackendale WIP

disjecta,

This is so beautiful, like all your other work I've seen. Music is perfect and such great composition! Web compression didn't quite seem as good as your stuff to me. Little noisier / grainier, even in the non nighttime shots. IMHO

Would you mind giving us a little glimpse of how you shoot? Do you walk/drive around all day looking for something? Do you spend a lot of time finding that perfect shot, or shoot a lot of stuff and cut later? For every shot in your films how many shots have you cut would you say?

Thanks!
Bill

Re: Brackendale WIP

hot damn, you did it again - these keep getting better and better.

I think I need a little more description, or diagram :) of how the tripod/crane move works?

I love that night shot of driving into Vancouver from Stanley Park... 1/4 shutter speed? I think I need to upgrade to the 100A some day.

beautiful work as allways, keep it up

Re: Brackendale WIP

There is one problem with your work disjecta.....it's not long enough ;D

Beautiful as always...loved it!!

Re: Brackendale WIP

Ohh man! Once again us dial-up'rs aren't allowed to take part in the reindeer games. Any chance we could see some grabs? I am sure the shots are beautiful, but seeing is believing. ;)

Re: Brackendale WIP

I just realized I had commented on an earlier work that I'd like to hear *some* ambient sound and had not appreciated that in this new one. Well, I like it, and the human element certainly changes the flavor of your work too. Tastes real good.

Re: Brackendale WIP

Thanks guys.

The tripod move is just to tilt it on two legs and either push it forward slowly or pull it back slowly. It makes macro shots a lot more interesting because there's very subtle movement.

The shots of the trees were done with a Glidecam 4000.

I'll see if I can post some screen shots for those with slow modem connections.

The noise in the compression is odd. It seems to be reacting to a lot of the reds in this piece. There's a little noise in the original because a lot of these shots were taken in pretty low light. No gain was used.

I do this so much that my shooting ratio is getting pretty small. I'm using about 1/3 of what I am shooting. I'm pretty deliberate with what I shoot also, I have honed my eye to the point that I can see shots that I know I'll use. There is quite a bit of experimentation also, of course. Sometimes shots I thought were average when I was shooting turn out to be gems in post....so I keep my eyes open all the time.

With the Pine Lake stuff (because I actually live there) the process is slower. I accumulate footage over time and when I have enough, I put a piece together.

When I'm away from the lake, I go into high sensitivity mode and really get off my ass to get shots and put much more effort into it because I know my time is limited. I did this with Brackendale because I was only there for 2 days and I also did it with Marymoor Park because it meant that I had to be up at 4 in the morning and get down there before the sun came up.

Taylor, I didn't meet "Mr. Bald Eagle Guy", because our trip was just too short and just out of season. We'll probably go back there again, it's a beautiful place.

Re: Brackendale WIP

Great opening. Perfect for the opening to a thriller. It's completely wrong for the calm and beauty that it now precedes. Come on, with the ability to create an opening like that you must have some darker stuff you want to show us. ;)

I told you I didn't care that it wasn't appropriate. I think there is a thriller in me...I just need the time to make it :D

Re: Brackendale WIP

I thought this was a damn 'film' at first. Especially when you cut to the phone booth; I was like...

ooohhh... creeepy!

Re: Brackendale WIP

I definitely want to do a drama at some stage. I'm just honing my camera skills in the meantime, while I don't have the time in my life to devote to a full-blown film.

Re: Brackendale WIP

Today is a great day for me.
Because of my busy work schudele I was not able to updat me on whats happening here in the DVX family.
I logged in and instantly see a disjecta posting and starts the download (Monday morning and wow my download speed is 12kb/sec for a change) Another 10min to go but I cant wait till I see the movie to write the comment.
How do u manage to put so much of time for hobby?

Re: Brackendale WIP

That was great. I was half expecting a couple creepy serial killers to get out of the car after the opening!

As always, outstanding. 8)
