GH3 Botched Time Lapse Made For Some Nice Stills

Nice! I like that first one the best, the lit up city behind it looks really cool. Great shots!

The issue was with the interval settings. I wanted to get the streaks but also the time lapse. slow shutter and long intervals with buffering didn't workout. I kind of figured it might not but if it didn't work then maybe I would get at least a few images out of it any way. The show was 30 minutes. If I had done 3 second intervals I would have had a nice little time lapse but the shutter speed then would have been faster so the streak effect minimized. This was the first time I've shot fireworks so was kind of learning experience and of course I decided to throw in a time lapse idea as well.:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I shot these in RAW and really didn't spend any time editing them. Plenty of room for it. I just got excited that I actually had a few good ones and wanted to share. I like the first one as well. I can get the city to pop more if I use a mask in Lightroom.

I'm not 100% sure what happened. It could be the RAW file took to long to process and the camera couldn't keep up so it skipped several shots or the long 8 sec exposure added to that made it worse. The other issue is i was shooting the fireworks with two other cameras so I just left the GH3 alone to snap away.

I had a C300 and C100 with a 24mm and 85mm Canon Cinema Primes going as well. I had a 24mm left pretty much static and maned the 85mm for artsy out of focus kind of shots. I'm reviewing these lenses for my blog and figured the fireworks show would be fun to show the bokeh of the lens.
So three cameras for a 30 minute one shot event and one guy shooting is more than I probably should have tried to do but hey! you got to try right?

Yes. I wish the C300 could overcrank in full HD but it doesn't. Grrr! That really bugs me that a $14K camera only does 60fps in 720.

We'll maybe get it with the MII of the C cams (in HD, at a time everyone is already shooting 4K...)

Dang, I soooo badly want those cine primes for my C100. But it would be as reasonable as driving a Porsche as my production car.

Dang, I soooo badly want a Porsche now.

I have been playing with the 24mm and 85mm. As usual I'm falling for the 85mm. That length in good glass always gets me. To bad I have to send them back.

I think a Porsche would be a very nice production car.

Erik- your first time shooting fire works? Where ya been man, at the bar?

Gorgeous stills, especially the first one! Love the slow shutter look. How did you meter/expose?
I think slow mo may be preferable to time lapse for fireworks.

I shot some fireworks on my AF100 (hope you don't mind my sharing):

I did a bit of overcranking (and a few shots of 24p slowed down in Premiere), but dangit, forgot to try some slow shutter speed for blurring- wish I had...
Look forward to your C100/300 fireworks!

Well Chuck I usually go to watch them. When you shoot you dont see the show. Last years 4th I was going to shoot stills but a misfire made all of the fireworks go off at the same time. Bummer. What a huge boom!

Recipe is super easy. F8 with 8 to 10 sec exposure. I focused on the barge that the fireworks shot off from. Also set with balance to 3200.
