C100: Book Promo Shoot w/ C100 and Overhead C-stand rig

Seems like these days there isn't a ton of showcasing of footage, so wanted to just share a cool shoot I had the other day with my c100. Was shooting a book promo video, and had an artist who does hand-sketching fly in to help w/ the video. We wanted to get an overhead view of her sketching and the goal on my end was to light it soft enough that there wasn't any shadows casting on the wood or on the paper. Decided to use my 5ft diffusion screen with a cool lights 4 bank blasting through, and a cool lights cdm70 on the left to give it a little more depth without being over-lit. Then I brought in a smaller 5in1 silver reflector to the right 3/4 position to fill in a little bit of the shadows on the right back side of her hand.

Rigged up the c100 on my avenger c-stand with the telescoping boom arm. This boom has a hook that you can sandbag on the other side to counterbalance, so I did that and used a manfrotto super clamp on the other side of the arm with my manfrotto 701hdv attached to that. Tested this all out before the shoot to make sure everything was stable, and it worked perfectly. Even if the camera plate somehow slipped, the 701 has the locking mechanism so that if it were to it would still lock instead of sliding out.

Had to use a construction bubble level to make sure the camera was horizontally stable since the 701 bubble level wouldn't work when placed in that configuration.

Lens was the Contax 28mm f2 (hollywood). Shot with cinema profile, and a quick grade in fcp x. Don't have any footage to show since its not edited yet but got this screen!

Love it and the lighting!! Thank you for posting it! Im trying to learn more about lighting so I appreciate this. Take a peek at Dusty Lense, he has some amazing lighted shots.

Thanks! Really appreciate it, thought it'd be a fun thing to share! And i'll check him out! I've seen some of his posts on here before

Very nicely done. I've had to do rostrum shots, too, and they can be tricky. Thanks for the BTS peak; definitely underscores why having a lightweight head kicking around the studio can be incredibly handy! Super/Mafer clamps FTW!

Yeah, I wonder why that is?

Great grab- love the lighting and the grade, the color and texture of the wood is beautiful!
How much would you say is the profile and how much the grade? What was your white balance method?

Will you be speeding up the video or using it real time?

Look forward to seeing the final product, since you like to share!

nice stuff. makes me work out in my head how i'd piece it together with what i have lying around. some beefy L brackets mating the tripod screw and the shoe screw come to mind....

Yeah, I wonder why that is?
Not being negative, especially to those who give constructive feed back, but I have noticed that when people show footage on the WWW it usually get picked to S@#t. This can really put people off so people just don't do it......Anyways I love BTS stuff, usually more than the production itself. Thanks for the pics yo.

Looks nice, Matt. Thanks for sharing. What brand is that 5' diffusion screen? Been looking for something just like it.

Thanks man! It is actually a digital juice 5ft 5 in 1 kit, honestly one of the best deals out there.

Looks like they have it again for only $199, I think I got mine for even cheaper when it was on sale, but $199 is still a very good deal. I use them on almost every shoot. They are pretty tough to learn how to fold up but once you get the hang of it its a breeze. They collapse to pretty compact sizes. The only bummer, is i'm not sure what stop diffusion the screen is. If I had to guess I would say its a 1 stop. Looks in that range for sure. I use these wescott claps to hold the reflector in place on both sides:

I know, $50 is pricy for a little clamp, but they are WAY better than just trying to jam the screen into a grip head which I used to do.
