Bond 23 - Skyfall

The problem with the new bond films is the influence of the Bourne series. I love Bourne, but the reason why the frenetic hand held camera worked was because it's about a man brought to his limits, and he's a david fighting a goliath. It's a simple story that hits the right chords while having great action.

The Bond series has been parodied to death. So the gadgets, including Q are out (not sure how I feel about that), and the stories are more... real? complex? I'm not exactly sure the direction they're going with the films. I agree the over the top weapon pen has to go in this day and age (unless you use it like Bourne in the first film), but the new films feel like they've gone in the wrong direction. They have to find a way to keep some wit and charm that the past bond films had.

I try and think about films that I've watched, and what I remember about them. It tells me something about the films and how they were over-all. The bourne series I think of the leaping from rooftops, the cool 'look I'm in your office!' moments, the small romance, and the determination of this one man against the entire CIA. The past two bond films I think of... some parkour... and... um... cards? oh and a dude with an eye patch... and some falling buildings...

Makes you think...

I was watching Revolutionary Road with my girlfriend not too long ago and we were joking about what it would be like if Thomas Newman would score the new Bond considdering it's Sam Mendes. Funny.

Yeah, The Matador was very cool.

Brosnan got the tone right in Goldeneye, but kind of over-camped it in the rest.

In all honestly the new trailers do nothing for me. I'm already bored of Craig as Bond, and what is it with Bardem and stupid haircuts?

How is that possible? I mean, QoS wasn't great but it wasn't awful either. In any case, Craig has been fantastic and probably the best Bond yet per the novels at the very least.

I just find him colorless. I appreciate shying away from the campier aspects of the Moore and Brosnan Bonds, but I think his portrayal is a little one note and by the end of QoS I was getting bored with it. I wish they'd stop trying to compete with the Bourne films and put a little fun back into the series. There is a difference between genuine wit and charm, which I felt the early Connery Bond's had, and the campy cheese the series degenerated into by the end of the Roger Moore era. A little of the former would do the modern Bond some good.

Fair enough. The alternative approach here then is to be excited to see a Bond film shot by Roger Deakins, scored by Thomas Newman, and directed by Sam Mendes. ;)

put a little fun back into the series

Did you not see the classic Bond moment where he adjust his suit after jumping from the train? :)

I really really like Daniel Craig as James Bond. Maybe my favorite so far. Looking forward to Skyfall.

Sounds good on paper, and I was initially intrigued by the team, but neither of them have done a Bond film before, which is its own special animal so I'm taking a wait and see approach. The trailer makes me believe they are still taking a Bourne-lite approach to the material which doesn't excite me...Personally I'd like to see Chris Nolan take on Bond, as the opening to TDKR was practically an audition reel, with Michael Fassbender as Bond.

Nooo, thats so lame, what if he wants to use different finger by holding gun upside down or just have to shoot without touching handle and just trigger ? What if he has gloves, i hate wannabe smart ideas that are moronic.
Hey, in final scene he would have to hand his gun to some bad guy and guess what will happen:zombie_smiley: you didnt expect that dont you !?

I'll join the masses and say I liked Casino Royale, and thought Craig was plenty good in it. Quantum did little for me. I found it flat, and Craig as well. I can only hope Skyfall breathes some needed life into it, but from the trailer, I don't know.

When Brosnan left, I was hoping for Clive Owen as Bond, and still felt he would have done better than Craig.
