Bolex D16: RAW, 16/Super 16 sensor size, costs less than MkIII

Because they took other people's money who may or may not get anything for it?

By that same token, should one never call out a snake oil salesman?

But, agreed, this can really go nowhere at the moment until it becomes clear one way or the other.

The D16 will be produced. The total development investment going into this camera far exceeds contributions by the Kickstarter crowd. Joe has a successful startup history with a similar custom specialty still camera/ software company and he is only one of the players invested in this. Lenso, Bolex, Pomfort, and an as yet unknown manufacturing partner are all invested in this project too.

I was very excited for this camera, but is it just me, or does anyone else think the short they shot with it didn't look too good?

Well remember it was shot with a machine vision camera with their sensor as proof of concept. Plus when shooting raw it's always good to remember that grading choices/mistakes are not necessarily due to the camera itself but the post processing applied to the raw camera data. So I would hold off on judgement until the camera is in it's finished form and run through it's paces by some DP's. then again as with all thing's I wouldn't jump to any conclusions or take anyone's word for it until I had tested it myself and seen what it could and couldn't do.

I just worry that Black Magic already stole much of the Digital Bolex's thunder, and that by the time it actual hits retail we'll be looking at the Black Magic v2. If the Digital Bolex hits the streets this week it'll make some waves, but what happens if it's another 9 months to a year before we actually get our hands on it? The sub 5k space is getting really competitive already!

It bares repeating, but the Digital Bolex does have at least one killer feature over the BMC: global shutter. BMC footage looks incredible...until something moves a little too much, then it's skew city.

Nobody else is other than Ikonoskop is making a sub $10k S16mm format camera. The Bolex will have a different feature set and appeal to a different shooter than the BMC. It will be a great camera for film schools to transition to digital cinema as they can use their existing 16mm lenses. It will be a better choice for action, sports, and doc shooters.

The short really doesn't demonstrate this (it looks like typical 1/60 motion to me), so that remains to be seen. One thing I'm sure will cause a lot of issues is shooting Raw 100% of the time. I think the BMC would be howled out tremendously if they tried this, so to their credit, BMD gave it ProRes/DNxHD as well.

I think that Ikonoskop having the same sensor is good enough reference to know what you can expect from it.
just my 2c...

AFAIK the Digital Bolex's sensor is the same model used in the machine vision camera that they used for the prototype (Kodak KAI 4050) but isn't the exact model used in the Ikonoskop (Kodak KAI-02150)

I'm not sure what the difference is if any

Also, according to Kodak the KAI 4050 only goes as high as 32fps; isn't the Digital Bolex supposed to go to over 90fps in low res?

Video think. Raw takes storage space, but has so much more creative range than any video codec. This is a camera for visual artists, not videographers.

Bolex is using the next higher model in the Kodak line. Ikonoskop has maximum resolution of 1920x1080. Bolex version has max res of 2336 x1752, shoots full 2k cinema resolution 2048 x 1152 at S16mm size.

I hope the DB16 comes to fruitrition for more reasons than having a good, capable tool. This little company will show that the age and eara of waiting for big companies to set the pace in what you as a user need in a camera is over. It is vaguely and with a ton of bokeh, linked to Open Hardware.

As for the camera itself, I would've backed it if I actually could've afforded it based on specs, but based on the actual shape, it isn't exactly what I want if I think about my ideal tool as a camera in terms of fiorm factor of the camera itself - I personally like the Red line and even the BMC to a degree - its the industrial shape that I'm attracted to - hardwearing, rugged, and simplistic, leaving you with adding to it the functionality that you need, the IndieCam is another nice example in terms of physical form factor that I attract too.

Go on DB16, show'em, all the doubters :cheesy:

The physical compatibility problem with the sensor and processor boards set them back a couple of months. Such is the nature of new product development. Unforseen problems occur and you have to solve them, no matter the time and cost involved.

Vaporware!!!

To be fair, BMC & RED both have had problems with their manufacturing in the last couple of years and delivered products later than expected. But at least they were running around with prototypes months before production. I get the feeling that there are no working prototypes of the Bolex anywhere? Just drawings, specs, a bunch of cute videos about how cool shooting RAW video is and a short film that was supposedly shot with a Frankenstein version of the camera. By the time this camera hits the ground, it may be way too late to compete.

That is correct. The only physical representation that I've seen so far has been a mockup, which is just the generic look of the product with no internals.

Just visited their forum...
They are saying 2013 for the kickstarter cameras now. The lack of even one working prototype would be alarming to me if I were one of those backers. There are pictures of a cool leather case though:happy:

Same old strory with delays. Tuffest part of the bussines.
Old dogs know how it's hard to develop something. They just dont promise or tease.
Anybody who try is brave.
