Bolex D16: RAW, 16/Super 16 sensor size, costs less than MkIII

No -- I just think it's bemusing that we always want the unshipped camera. This D-Bolex this is the next shiny thing that hasn't yet disappointed us. :P

Well - after Red pretty much trashed our hopes, I haven't gotten my hopes too high. I am willing to keep an open mind however. By October or so, we'll see if they have production volumes on this camera, what kinds of things people can do with it, and what it will cost. Assuming it actually comes to market.

I hope they're successful.

They already went back on this, saying that production models are unlikely to appear until 2013.

What are people thinking with regards to C-Mount & PL Glass for the D16, hopefully the Bolex D16 will be bundled with both mounts. .

Primes, Light-weight Zooms. . ?

And the Digital Bolex guys mention there is some redevelopment with the Audio and they want to make it the best available, what type of Mic would you mount on the Hot-shoe ?

Maybe not. Let's see what the BMD's rolling shutter looks like, vs. the global shutter CCD of the DigiBolex.

I'd be willing to bet you'll never be able to make that comparison.
Why, presumably because you think the DBolex will never be released? Let's not be negative nancies.

I can tell you that if/when the DBolex is released, it will have zero rolling shutter. And the BMCC definitely does have some. Some people say it's comparable to other cameras, some say it's worse; I tried a little random testing and was unable to come to a definitive conclusion. Seemed GH2-caliber to me, but without scientific side-by-side testing I'm not willing to commit.

The DBolex, if designed right, will certainly have its place on the market next to the BMCC. Being S16-sized, it opens up a wide variety of lenses that will never work on the BMCC. I have no doubt at all which will be the bigger seller, surely the BMCC will vastly outsell it (if for nothing else, because they already have an established network of dealers). But even when everyone was buying HVX200s, Canon still managed to sell an occasional XLH1, and for those who needed/wanted what the XLH1 did, it was a good thing it was on the market. More choice = better for the consumer, so best of luck to the DBolex guys, I hope they are successful.

I've preordered the BMCC but absolutely think there's a place for the DBolex. I would love to have a RAW camera that can take 16mm glass. And global shutter? I would pay an extra 2k for the BMCC if it had that.

so best of luck to the DBolex guys, I hope they are successful.

My gut was they were 'dead dream waking' well before the BMD announcement so sadly I wouldnt be surprised if BM's cam was the final nail in the coffin. Having said that I really do hope Im wrong, that the Bolex is released and they do find some success as the market really needs players at this end of the spectrum. A healthy market with true choice across the board can only ever be a good thing.

My gut was they were 'dead dream waking' well before the BMD announcement ...

Having worked in retail and hospitality heaps I know that the customer is often completely wrong about how well a store is doing. A store can being doing extremely well but because the customer has read an article about the death of bookstores they assume business is crap. Or just because it's a bar the customer assumes the owner is raking it in.

So don't trust your gut. It's just as likely to be wrong.

I have been following their progress on their site from the get go...
I think they made some early mistakes (just my opinion) in not explaining that their early footage was shot by a "proof of concept" cam (basically another camera with modifications) not a true prototype. Semantics? Possibly...but it just made it SEEM as though they weren't quite sure what the end camera would be details wise..... they were uncertain of olpfs, their monitor resolution and implementation, outputs, right down to the overall design. But, they seem to be plugging away...and the CCD sensor, plus the 16mm compatibility...and the ergonomic design sets them up to have a place of their own. I just hope they get it all together, even if it will be a bit later than sooner.

It is a revelation shooting handheld global shutter CCD after all the CMOS cameras....

But that Kodak CCD is a difficult mistress - Ikonoskop had a hell of a time with it, and it nearly shut down their company after the calibration scandal of '11...

Why, presumably because you think the DBolex will never be released? Let's not be negative nancies.

They are continuously adding features and even switched from CF card media to SD card media for crying out loud, for a product that's supposed to come out in 4-5 months. All telltale signs of development hell.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot. Didn't they come out and say no cameras until 2013 already?

Joe has a kickstarter related to that as well.....it's right there on his twitter. I'll refrain from comment, other than to say it seems that Elle Schneider is a different person than than Ela Darling. Ela Darling does have a site and Joe Rubinstein has connections with her, but she is NOT Elle Schneider. I think we should make that clear straight away.

Perhaps so, but according to the interview they did with Mr. Bloom a few days ago at NAB, they are on track to deliver to their investors in August of 2012: http://philipbloom.net/2012/04/17/nab3/ (interview starts at 15:00). They have also added an HDMI port and made other changes in response to input from investors and potential customers.

Cheers,

Bill
