Bolex D16: RAW, 16/Super 16 sensor size, costs less than MkIII

Thanks, I'll see if I can find it.

Edit: It's post #219

Ha!, you beat me to it...lol. I just feel they are not being up front, I am not suggesting they don't WANT to do what they are suggesting. But it's a bad start to first say, yeah our film was shot with a prototype, oh wait no it wasn't...it was shot with a camera with the same sensor as the one we intend to use. Should have maybe mentioned that little tidbit....but then that wouldn't be as exciting as saying it was done on an "early prototype"
Their is an ethics lesson in here somewhere!

Nice of you to come in on this Barry - Are the Zeiss Tevidon m25 16mm/25mm/100mm C or CS-Mounts ? and are they TV/CCTV lenses ?

What do you think on the C-Mount Xenon's v Zeiss Tevidon's for the D16
Haven't used them, haven't seen one, so I don't know and can't say. They look like regular c-mount to me. Question is the functionality of the lens, the adjustability of the iris, the focus ring, the focus distance, the breathing, all that stuff. I wouldn't expect a security-camera lens to be configured to work like a cinema lens, I expect it would be more like a set-it-and-forget-it type of lens. But I'm just talking off the top of my head here, as I haven't used them. Old Switars have nice focus travel and are expected to be used on cinema cameras, even though they're very small.

But I wouldn't be surprised if the Tevidons outperform the older cine lenses in terms of image quality.

Definitely agree. It would have been nice if they had mentioned this earlier, and not waited until someone else figured it out.

They added HDMI output today to the spec list!
great news.

Wonder if delivery in August is somewhere realistic....

Cheers

Sounds like some great updates! Makes me slightly regret pulling my #40-something model. I chose to do so to invest in another piece of equipment and had nothing to do with the camera. Sometimes I wish I had stayed. These new features sure doesn't help! :)

Anybody notice the 4/3 mode in the new specs. Playing with anamorphic optics could be pretty sweet. If using rails and support, not really too concerned about c-mount compatibility, there are adapters for just about anything including PL. I have arri-s and nikon in my kit. If there is a big enough demand I'm sure a certain Polish adapter maker could even do m4/3 to c-mount to allow for those sweet voitlander and slr magic primes.

I'm pretty well set with a 10mm schnieder plus nikon adapter. If this camera comes to fruition I may have to get my 17-85mm pan-cinor with beam-splitter side finder cleaned and lubed, and collimated to the d-bolex. That would make for a pretty slick and 'hipster' package for walk around use.

I see they are STILL saying this was shot on a prototype, when it WASN'T, it was shot on an existing camera, and they admitted it when it was pointed out here. If they really want people to believe in them, perhaps they shouldn't be continuing with misrepresentations. Just saying...

A sensor in a box with a bus port and a lens mount is not a complete camera. These industrial box cameras are little more than that and have to be connected to external electronics and software, usually a computer, to even produce an image at all. The custom electronics package hanging off the back of the sensor block is what makes it a functional camera, and a working prototype. Everything in this camera will be readily available open market hardware, nothing new there. It is the overall implementation of the final camera design and custom software as a complete package that will set it apart and make it into a practical tool for filmmakers.

According to Joe Rubinstein, HDMI output will probably be black-and-white while the future HD-SDI module will support full color.

What's going to happen if these things take off? Will there be enough decent old c-mount cine lenses to go around without costing a fortune?

I understand that, but what they used was NOT a prototype...it was a "modified" proscilla gx2300c. A prototype would be- the kodak sensor, their own housing, etc etc....not a modified camera...that costs over 5000 bucks. And beleive me I'm not the only one who thinks it was a bit misleading. I could personally care less (other than for people who are investing) I have no money on this thing, but when Vitaly...GH1/2 famed hacker Vitaly has concerns about the feasibility and has done his own research about this project, then other people might want to look into it a little bit before thinking they will have a finished product soon. Look it up, google it..... This camera has little chance of being out in 2012. Esp when they are changing the design by the hour.

Too few details, date unrealistic, “partner companies” all owned by same person.
Oh my... And to think of all cash that instead of being lost, could of actually gone to the good lads over at IKONOSKOP who will actually make this type of camera for you already for the last two years ... ;/

I ended up cancelling my pledge. Not for reasons that others seem to have, but -- it's just too early. When I got an update from them saying "we're still wondering whether we should put in an OLPF or not", the whole thing started to seem too garage-made for my tastes. I went through the early, early days of the Red One (I was #364) and I really don't have any appetite to go through the growing pains again.

I was happy to be the guy who put them over the top so that their kickstarter was guaranteed to succeed, but now that they've raised 2.5x as much, they don't need my pledge, and after seeing Kholi and RPO drop out I rethought it and -- really, at this stage, I think I'll pass, until they get it sorted out. I'll pay the higher price ($3300) when it's done and finished, and very much look forward to that day.

Not for $3,300, they can't. If IKONOSKOP could sell them for that much, they probably couldn't keep up with demand.
Let's see if D-Bolex can really come through. I'm in it for a t-shirt, anyway.

Joe has already admitted that the price is likely to go up from this based on the spec revisions—yet he still somehow intends to deliver by August for KS backers with a two-person team with no prior experience.

And while they are supposedly outsourcing almost everything, an update showing the other people “involved” at IENSO—the manufacturer owned by the same person as their other partners, which also has 0 work samples on their website—did not include their names or even what they did… it just said that “bios will come soon”. Turns out most of them worked for the same failed startup previously. Not that I’d say that means anything on its own, as my previous working relationship was with a failed startup myself, but when taken in the context of everything else, it’s just the nail in the coffin for me.

Problem is, even if they were on schedule for an August release, adding new features -- while commendable in itself -- won't help them stick to the schedule, or the original price. That was Red's problem with Scarlet. And we all know how that turned out.

I'm sticking with my camera pledge even if it does fall past the August deadline I can wait.

$2500 will be a lot of money to loose if it goes wrong and I sold my A-Minima for it, but. . . . . .I've got to believe.

I'm just playing around with the footage from my XF100. It's at this pricepoint, has a fairly decent codec that stands up to grading, and is the ultimate run and gun. It just works.
