I've been burning (sucsessfully) blu-ray discs since summer '2007, on PC, primarily with DVDit Pro HD. Maybe this is not news to some but I found an external burner that's proven to be reliable and I found it at a great price . . .
It's an LG External BD-R. Works with Windows XP Home/Professional/Media Center Editions and Windows Vista (X86, X64). I've got no clue whether it can be adapted to a MAC. Plugged it into my laptop and just started burning--It's considerably faster than the Pioneer Internal I have in my workstation but that's probably because the laptop doesn't have as much software running in the background. Yep, it'll do the newer 50gig discs.
Here's where I found it for $299: http://www.discmakers.com/duplicators/bluraydrives/lgexternal.asp
Hope this helps someone.
Best.
