Blu Ray Burners For Sale

UP to 12 hours of recording. This is promising... and has the D4 connector. Isn't there supposed to be a computer based blueray for a grand? This unit looks like a surefire unit for long record time live events....

Various types of BluRay burners have been available for a while in Japan via Sony's beta test program and other obscure sources. IMO, I wouldn't buy into one just yet until all the final details are worked out... We don't know what revision these players adhere to, nor do we know if they will be supported with upgraded firmware down the road. Unless you have money to burn on a geeky toy, this isn't what you want...

BTW: BluRay burns just like DVD+RW - all the same features plus a few new ones and increased capacity and multiple layers. Initial recorders will only support dual-layer discs.

Official BluRay player release in the USA and Japan is still on track for late April or early May. Recorder drives for your computer should be available early to mid April, so we don't have much longer to wait. HD-DVD should be available in both player and recorder form about 30 days before BluRay. I think any of us planning to provide HD content to a wide audience will probably need to consider both. I'll probably buy a recorder for each and hold off on players for my Home Theatre until LG and Marantz release their dual-format players. Both have announced they will have them this summer. And with Hollywood so evenly divided, I think most of the "experts" are wrong about the format "war". My bets are on universal format players settling the argument rather than one disc format outpacing another....

Perfectly said. Do you think there will be an inexpensive portable solution? Laptop? or just desktop?

Agreed.

DVD+R/W, DVD-R/W, it took a while for manufacturers to incorporate both into burners and readers. Manufacturers have learned their lesson. LG and Marantz will have their dual players out of the gate almost as fast as the first generation burners. Smart.

What about dual format burners? Are they on the horizon as well?

Yeah, these should be available at the same time or shortly after BluRay arrives. LG and Marantz are the only two companies that have officially announced such a product, but so far no prices or model numbers, etc.. Sony, Toshiba, and some of the other big names will undoubtedly push their supported format of choice in their typical bull-headed fashion... At least until the market finally demands that they relase a dual format player. Sony and Toshiba will be the last to do such a thing because whoever does it first is essentially admitting defeat to the other and this rivalry over HD discs is pretty intense. Neither Toshiba or Sony can block a dual-format player from the market (as long as the player and its manufacturer have properly licensed all the technologies). Trying to prohibit a dual format player is against various business/antitrust laws in the USA, Japan and Canada as well as several other places - the UK too I think.

None that I know of. :-( Could be a while.... But perhaps LG will do one of these too.

The players are suposed to be a grand, so you can bet a recorder will be more. That is too much for my blood for what it is and does.

The $1K player rumor was squashed at CES. RCA, Samsung, LG, Toshiba and even Sony and Pioneer all announced HD-DVD and BluRay players in the < $500 range. Pioneer and Toshiba will have HD-DVD recorders for $995 MSRP for internal PC drives and less than $100 more for external versions. Sony didn't announce prices for their BluRay drives for computers, but said that prices would be comparable.
