Blocks in footage.

Has anyone else seen this? I'm shooting with the 150 onto transcend 16 gb class 6 sdhc cards. Record format is PH 1080/60i. To edit I transfer footage onto an external lacie HD through my macbook pro. convert footage into quicktime files through log and transfer and store on same lacie drive which I then hook up to my power mac g5 and edit in FCP. Are these blocks the result of bad cards, bad camera, or a mac thing?

Saw that thread. On that pict it looks like signal info is overlapping in parts. In my picts it looks like info is missing.

Also I should have noted earlier that band of green isn't in the footage, that happened when I exported to jpeg.

I think its kind of the same, its a transcoding issue then? It may have something to do with AVCHD in general. A bunch of information is shared among many frames. So its been difficult for software to put it all together so we can do what we please with it.

I saw similar issues at the join point (when the 4 GB file size limit forces the video to a new file on the sdhc card in fat32) when importing into final cut pro...but haven't noticed it in a long while after firmware and fcp updates so perhaps they fixed the issue.

tommulligan, what version of FCP are you using to transcode? 6.0.4, 6.0.5, 6.0.6???
Are you transcoding to AIC (apple intermediate codec) or ProRess422???
Have you tried toast 9 or 10 to transcode???
let us know to further look into this!!!

Have you played the footage back in the camera to see if it happens there? If the footage is good on the camera, then it's not the camera or card's fault.

If it's showing up on the camera -- did you format the card in the camera? You MUST. People who ignore this mandatory commandment are finding occasional little glitches, or recording stopping prematurely, etc.

Do not ever try to use an SDHC card in an AVCHD camera unless you have formatted that card BY THE CAMERA. I don't know why it makes such a big difference but it does. And it says so in the manual.

I just came back from a shoot and I had mistakenly inserted a new card that was not formatted. All the shots came out allright. Held my breath though ...
I believe the blocks your are experiencing has more to do with the software your using and not the camera. Play it back in the camera to be sure as Barry said.
The card was a transcend 8gb card gotta love TS.

ps: you should always format a new card before recording !

i've been having blocks a lot lately. and its the transcode process that does it. re-watching on camera its always fine. i'm looking forward to seeing if the new fcp resolves this issue.

I have never formatted the SDHC in my HMC150, never experienced problems, but I will format all of them tonight and thanks for the info here. Guess I should have read the manual more carefully!

Sorry for the delay in responding haven't been able to log on.
I'm using FCP 6.06 transcoding to ProRes 422 (as per Panasonic's recommendations)
Have not tried toast, not a fan so I never upgraded past 6
I did not format the cards, I'll do that before my next job.

The blocking appeared on four frames out of 3 1/2 hours of footage. If it were tape I'd call it dropped frames. That's not supposed to happen with AVCHD, right?
