BlackMagic - URSA Mini

more Mini 4.6K shoots by Roman Alaivi

"Here's some footage from around the city I got today running around with sticks this time...! Sorry about the compression, don't know why Vimeo is trashing this particular vid, but it does look pretty bad at the moment. You can still download if you wish!"

Despite your worries about compression, the footage looks pretty damn good. I really like the look out of this camera. I literally just came off another Camera thread and bam! This footage just hits you.

It looks to give nice colors. Its dynamic range may be questioned. The low light performance and the related noise are yet to be seen.

I downloaded the 1080p Sunday stroll file from Vimeo. The dynamic range and noise are *excellent*. I am putting this camera on my radar because I can have this camera kitted for about the same money as Sony wants for the AXS5 raw recorder alone and memory cards for my PMW-F55, and comes with a full copy of Resolve. About the only feature it seems to lack is adjustable ND unless I missed that somewhere. Although I have complete cinema PL glass, I also have Canon EF "L" lenses with zoom and stabilization and easier fitment of ND without resorting to matte box. It thus seems like a *perfect* complement, CinemaDNG raw internal, wide dynamic range, flexible ergonomics. What we don't know again unless I've missed it, is the color gamut possible from the CFA. The dyes used represent a significant cost. Although the colors in the sample video are bright and vivid in 709, we don't know what the CIE primariy endpoints are. This is a consideration for HDR and WCG with the possible reservation of the latter, the URSA mini seems well suited for.

The footage looks awesome.

Any guesses why it's so late? It looks like it won't be released properly before NAB. Did they run into unexpected problems or are they adding some unannounced features? Both? What could those problems be and why aren't they saying anything about the delay?

Supposedly, they are still working on the sensor (tweaking color science, dynamic range, etc.), and the only reasonable speculation regarding a delay is possible problems with the switchable global shutter mode.

I like the look of this camera a lot as well. Just has that high-end feel to the footage imho. Will be great to see them in the wild whenever that will be.

Grant Petty gave an update once (maybe more) in 2012 about bad sensors. This year is certainly the worst with the delays and no communication, but it's also a year with the most pressure for them too.

Love the colors. This is much more what I'm looking for and use for benchmark than for example the Raven video, although that one shows a good camera, I have no clue as to what the grading and light levels on set were like, but I've been to grand canyon and know well how the colors are, etc...

This a truly cinema camera!

Camp Comet on Vimeo:
"black borders = 2K RAW
no borders = UHD ProRes HQ
All RAW files are REC709 in the DNG tab, with very minor adjustments (white balance still off)
Long pan shot at the beginning should give a pretty obvious idea of DR... nothing's blown out but specular highlights, things that my eyes had trouble with on the spot. White cars, no clipping.
Tamron SP VC 45mm 1.8 and Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 VC -- last shots starting with the people walking in the sand and into the guy with the hat are all the 45/1.8 for sure.
Could go anywhere with this footage to be honest, between Dynamic Range and color latitude, many possibilities but good to see it with a standard Display Lut."
