BlackMagic - URSA Mini

"B"ad "M"onth "D"ecisions. or "B"ored of "M"ore "D"elays". or "B"ait "M"ass "D"elusionals. If you think that BMD doesn't use July tags, then ships in late October early November hoping that you have parked your money aside while clicking links every morning about updates as to where you might be on a waiting list in the hopes you won't spend that parked money on other very capable cameras, I have a bridge to sell you.

I mean come on. The last I heard was that they were delayed because of the gyro calibration. Since then, we've seen a single 4.6k sample of the cameras sensor. And better yet, there are people out there thinking this camera is going to elevate them based off a controlled limited release of some footage. I don't really want to bash them, but the pattern is set and absurd is absurd.

It isn't fair to blame BMD for the collection of dongles who think that the 4.6k sensor will magically make them talented.

BMD does it too themselves, if I ever see them at a trade show I will give them my advice (which I am sure they have heard from someone else, I hope). But just announce seasons if you can't/wont say coming soon. A summer/fall release works wonders on the bad blood and vitriol they create by missing deadlines. And I don't want your bridge Dusty! Again who is paying upfront for these cameras? How does that help BMD? As it was said earlier if people want to wait thats on them, but most professionals aint waiting. And they are hurting there existing camera sales as well by having the very large shadow of the mini hover over the lineup.

Dear Abby,

I'm in love with the sexiest woman I've ever met. I never thought a guy like me would meet a woman like this and do the things we do together. But you know, I have to bash her because she annoys the sh&* out of me by being late all the time...for the incredible nights that I never thought I'd be able to enjoy.

And before you counter with the "but they're hardly the dream cameras" - then why do you care if they don't deliver on time?

If you're waiting for something you think will be transformational in quality and cost for your profession, a little patience isn't just a virtue - it's common sense.

Haha the go to BMD knocks, I swear you guys take this too personal. It's a tool, I can't speak for the URSA but the firmware for the BMCC and BMPCC is very much mature and has no FPN and with v mounts you get plenty of battery life. I also can't speak on the production 4K. I just want people to stop painting certain companies with a broad brush. I could say Canon overcharges and under delivers on spec. I could say Sony looks sterile and also releases unfinished cameras with annoying quirks. But I don't because I use whatever camera I want and I am not paid by any manufacturer.

I know BMD makes cameras that make a very high end image for cheap. I also know it's not perfect and I can't use it for everything I do. I appreciate what they have done in the production market even though they do certain things that don't make a lot of sense. I just don't enjoy biases in any part of life and it seems the guys who own the more expensive cams love to diss BMD. Just like Canon guys bash Sony and vice versa. And how Canon and Sony guys love to bash RED, the only cam that gets Goat status is Alexa.

I doubt highly that the delay will have any adverse affect on their sales.
This depends on what else is released before them. If Sony brings out a 5K FS700 replacement or Canon announces a 1D XII with internal 4K and a nice codec or even GH4R, then the delayed release could also have the "you snooze, you lose" effect.

.... EDIT: This is a quote from Princess Bride. I am not serious.
I was at a supermarket recently - yes, I do buy groceries - and at the checkout lane, there was a mag celebrating 25 years of the PB. And I said to my g/f, "Hey, look, PB. With Robin Wright on the cover" and, as I was about to launch into a story how I once met Robin, my g/f says, "I've never seen this movie". OK, that I can sort of understand, as she wasn't residing in the US at the time. I then ask the checkout clerks whether they had seen it and they just shrug their shoulders and one of them says, "I don't think I have seen a single movie made before the year Two Thousand".

So, know your audience.

And beware of those Australians too.

Given that Canon just released the C300MKII at a $16,000 price point, releasing anything that's competitive with BMD's 4.6K sensor would hurt Canon more than it would hurt BMD. Any serious contender at this point would have to be a fairly significant new product, and isn't likely to materialize in time to make a dent in the Ursa Mini sales. And BMD probably knows this, so they really have no reason to rush.

That said, I'm pretty happy with what I have right now, and I'm starting to get my stuff noticed, so I'm a lot more willing to be patient than most. :)

I guess if it was not almost every product they launch, then no a couple of months would not be a big deal.

Sony might release FS1 to replace FS100 in 2016. But I can't see that competing with URSA Mini.

This isn't the first time this has happened. They are now an established company with a deep product line. There is no excuse for the severely missed deadlines. All the other points from the buyer's perspective are on point, but you need to ease up on being an apologist for every camera manufacturer. They are big boys and I'm sure they can handle the criticism that in this case is very valid.

And others need to ease up complaining on a forum that BM likely doesn't even look at. You all made your point that you are frustrated. You still didn't answer my question of how this affects your life and creates a major problem for you? I'm not sticking up for BM but stating facts that a camera delayed by a few months is not the end of the world. People are still going out and buying other cameras and the production world lives on. This is only an issue in your mind.

If people have the right to complain on here then I have the right to point out that complaining is kind of silly.

Why does something have to affect someone's life in some serious way for them to chime in. This is a camera/video/film forum....people talk about cameras. That includes good/bad/positive/negative. No one ever said delays were a life altering event, but if a camera company(which is what often gets discussed here) does negative things, expect negative feedback. Pretty simple.

According to the rumor sites, 1D X MK II is out in the early testers hands. There are fairly easy ways to give it a solid 4K performance without threatening C300 MKII, which has a lot of high end features.

Sony might release FS1 to replace FS100 in 2016. But I can't see that competing with URSA Mini.
Sony already competes against the URSA Mini with A7 RII. To be sure, the codec is crippled and, in terms of video, it's a lower tier camera overall but, for ~ $2,000-$2,500 more, they have a lot of options.

And others need to ease up complaining on a forum that BM likely doesn't even look at...
That they actually do do. Look at. And post video links. And they should do it more often.

I think they still need a 4-5k video camera. Do you think Sony has one in the works?
I am not sure at what point, the engineers who develop a given technology begin to work on a particular project. In other words, Sony clearly has a lot of advancements in the works but what they decide to package together for the market is often left to the marketing/corporate. I am sure they have to have a pro tier $5,000 ILC but they can just as easily release an F5 replacement first. Of rumors, something that looks like A99 may be arriving sooner rather than later. Features, glass, codec, etc. are still kept under wraps.

PS. And, yes, A7RII competes against URA Mini and FS7 competes against URSA Mini. They just do it off different ends, sort of like Z370 competes against the Cayman on the lower end while GTR does on the higher.
