BlackMagic - URSA Mini

LOL at the people focusing on BM marketing pictures. Are these guys bothered by the model's look, maybe because they are themselves balding and out of shape? You don't have to have a bad hair do and a beer gut to be a professional camera operator. I see nothing wrong with somebody with good hair and fit behind the camera. Personal care should not be reserved to people in front of the camera only. Get over it. It's just marketing.

Your attempt to squeeze all the fun out of these circumstances will have little affect....the image is just too Hilarious!!!

Cheers!

This is a stupid discussion and has nothing to do with the thread, but I will take it another step - since many here are either tangential to marketing or provide content for those who are, they know that the success of good marketing is based on demographics, an assessment of what image and/or slogan might appeal to the widest base of potential customers.

Clearly this particular image doesn't, it is laughable - It is bad marketing - and it has nothing to do with an attractive model (Apple doesn't have shlubs either), although I assume the "look" was meant to be retro (I'm serious when I say I haven't seen hair like that since the greaser days of drag racing), it doesn't reflect the progressive image of Blackmagic Design - If I had been in the board room - as I have been with some companies in the past - the argument would have reached epic proportions.

To take this back to the technology aspect - I was watching Dave Dugdale's NAB summary (and I got half-way through it too) and heard him mention that a major difference from the NAB'14 was that, the last year, many folks there were running around with their 5D MK III's and this yearCanon's were gone and replaced by A7s's.

Which makes me think that the top values still come from the Big Boys - GH4, A7s, LS100 - if that's what they aim for. IMO, it will be very difficult for the independents to keep their current advantages - and I am talking Red, BMD and even ARRI - once these cameras image quality approaches and/or exceeds a human eye's capacity to discern any differences. Then the market becomes totally commoditized and ruled by the economies of scale. We're seeing it in a photo and the smart phone markets already. The pro video will be next.

Blackmagic doesn't make the kind of camera that I would take if I was to cover an event like NAB. It does make the kind of camera I would use to shoot a short film where aesthetic is paramount.

It was very cool for me to see a number of crews/bloggers like Newsshooter/Nofilmschool/NextwaveDV/etc all using our cameras to cover the event. Even better seeing them at our booth filming and doing interviews about our new cameras with our existing cameras.

Interesting. I didn't see a single A7s at NAB, but I saw a bunch of Ursas, C100s, and FS7s.

But BMD sponsors these sites too.

No 5D MK III's?

Well, then, you and Dave agree on something.

Even if the cameras were discounted or free for them to use (we don't know), they clearly still used them and I'd be surprised if they didn't have other options. Even if they didn't, they look to be getting the job done for them and I've seen many others who say they prioritize image quality so use those cameras for event work - seems totally doable to me. I've done doco work with a pocket and it was no more a hassle to use than a rigged up DSLR which people also choose to use (I have done also).

Back to topic, seems the URSA Mini would be even more useable for what they Dan Chung team in the pic above seem to be doing. Time will tell.

Well as creative director that spends his days working with branding, two things:

First, these decisions (collateral design, models and photographic style) aren't made in board rooms, they're made in places like my firm in consultation with the marketing directors of the company we're branding - these aren't Grant Petty decisions.

Second, If you've done this, then you know that all creative is subjective an there are cultural differences (both regional and corporate) that come into play in all marketing.

Bottom line is there is nothing absurd or objectionable about that image or any of the images on their site. It's slick and professional and has a style that they've been using for a while on their site and materials.

One more thing - this is the dumbest f*%^@ing critique of a new camera system I've witnessed on a discussion forum.

Out of curiosity, has anybody figured out how one would down convert the only SDI output on the URSA Mini, which is 12G-SDI, to an HD monitor (using 3G-SDI) for additional monitoring?

Just like URSA, you can choose a 1920 output as well as 4K from the rear SDI. There is also the front 1920 SDI if you're not using the EVF.

I saw a lot of Ursas and a7s cameras in use, and Cions on display. Cion definitely gets the award for prettiest camera, if nothing else... it wasn't in use anywhere that I saw, just being shown off all over the place ;)

Weirdly the URSA 4.6k demo footage is brought by Newsshooter, Cinema5d and 4K shooter as if it is news.
But actually it is already promoted 30 days ago and old news.

Or people have been sleeping. Or Blackmagic pushed their footage again to the media because they can handle more orders.

I think it's weird anyhow.

I hoped for actual new footage. Not that it matters because I already ordered 30 days ago based on the demo footage and specs.

Maybe they're trying to compensate for not having anything else to report about Black Magic, since the company is so secretive about basically everything ;)

Same here, pretty much. I contacted my retailer immediately after I walked away from the press conference to get on the preorder queue, because I knew it was going to be a hot item as soon as the articles went public. I suspect that the best case is that it starts shipping to distributors toward the end of July, and the prorder queues with the bigger retailers will probably be at least a month or two out already. Once the fetters are off and the testers are allowed to start sharing footage though, the queues will get a lot longer.

I also found it strange that the footage is now appearing on those well informed blogs and posted as "new" footage. They must have got the embed link direct from BMD. I wish I had it too but I wouldn't post it as new.

Well, Newsshooter is sponsored by BMD but this has to be a coordinated marketing effort by the company.

Which invites speculation that the camera must be on its way.

Faymus Corey also posted that his review is to be published soon.

For the 4.6k sensor?

Not sure if you're referring to my site above, but I co-run 4KShooters.net and we haven't ran the "new" footage as it's most certainly not new, but we did run some new footage from the 4K (old sensor) URSA recently that our readers submitted to us and we liked.

That 4.6k footage/demo reel in questions was available on BMD's official website, but I am guessing a lot of people hand't seen it, as the embed was disabled.

Although we love BMD cameras, (I shot my feature film on the BMCC EF) we're not affiliated/sponsored with/by BMD or any other manufacturer.

Embedding was disabled for a long time with my 4.6K video, but we enabled it recently so some places shared it (again) because they could finally embed it.
