Feels like a very biased comparison to me actually. 4/5 of the article is about the new URSA Mini and raves about it, it's not really a true comparison at all. It all looks good on paper. However, the truth is that until it hits the streets this is a theoretical camera and it's coming from Blackmagic. Which means there will be unfinished business with it when it comes out, and god knows when the high end version really will be out. I just can't believe with the number of times people have been burned by BM (who has not honored their own warranty with regards to several issues on some of their previous cameras - but that's another story) that people jump right in again and believe all the specs and hype. I will wait until the camera actually exists in the marketplace before investing a dime this time around.

Personally, I find it incredibly disingenous to be quoting prices for third party accessories which are different and once again skewed towards the URSA. I mean honestly why include a Gratical HD for the FS7 and not for the Mini? It is compatible with both. Or vise versa. The Blackmagic will be compatible with both too. As it stands doing that and then showing how much more expensive one is than the other as a result is totally ridiculous. Or how about the shoulder pad ? Sorry but the BM's looks just as uncomfortable as the original one for the FS7. So why not use a Zacuto Universal Shoulder Pad for either?

AS a side note, who uses a 50/1.8 for shooting video? It has the worst manual focus ring of practically any lens out there. Why bother? Lastly, in terms of lenses, he has totally missed on a very important consideration which is major for pro's. The mounts are not easily interchangeable on the mini. This is the same problem I have with the Canon C300's. What happens when you have both PL and EF lenses? Buy two cameras? (Let's see how the pricing would look in that case :-). This is a huge advantage for the FS7. You can easily find adapters for E-Mount everything. And let's face it, your lenses will last longer and cost more these days than either of these cameras will be worth a couple of years from now and that has got to be a significant factor when considering any camera purchase going forward.

The majority of people - myself included - seem to feel that the demo footage for the new sensor looks superb. For those placing an order for the Mini partly based on that footage, bearing in mind that the demo was shot on the original Ursa but with the new sensor, is there a possibility - or even probability - that the imahe from the Mini won't look as good? Because of the smaller size it presumably has less processing power and cooling - this is reflected in the lower max frame rates - but could it have an impact on the image too?

The article is supposed to be a little biased its a first look at the URSA Mini. Also every thing Blackmagic promised they delivered, it may have taken some time but they delivered. And Sony has been releasing unfinished cams lately as well so it seems you are being a bit biased. I can't speak for others but the Blackmagic cams I have used have been rock solid workhorses. They deliver what they say they are going to deliver a great image at a great price, that is why people pre-order and "fall" for the tricks. I use and own Sony's I just wish people would leave bias at the door and stop throwing shade.

the only thing I could see, if what you suggested about the mini having less cooling turns out to be true, then it's possible that the mini might have more noise from heat. Although there are too many factors to suggest with any certainty.

I cant ant wait until this camera hits the streets and images start popping up online!

I worked with at least 7 different cameras last year. I choose the right camera for the right job. If that constitutes bias, then so be it. I also think it is a bit rich on your part to state that they deliver what "they say they are going to deliver". You seem to glance over the two important caveats,
1) it has taken them YEARS after first release to deliver it with regards to their original cameras.
2) it has taken a heck of a lot of prodding on their endusers part to get them to follow through on their promises.
Reliablity is not their strong point and from a professional point of view, buying a camera from them upon first release is a joke.

Oh, and by the way, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that their original cameras and even the original URSA are ergonomic nightmares either in terms of form or weight. They couldn't have figured out that their revolutionary Mini was a more coherent form factor and weight from the beginning, after I don't know, the decade or two of that style of body already being out there? Hardly inspires confidence.

I leave you with another enduser's experience (not my own - from here: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?130585-BM-NEW-Ursa-Mini-claimed-15-stops-of-DR&p=1494121&viewfull=1#post1494121):

In my experience with several BM products:

labels on buttons rub off on first use (I kid you not)...

buttons and lids pop off (wow)...

tripod mounts fall out(I have never seen that on ANYTHING else)...

screens so cheap they shouldn't even be included(seriously, uhhh what?)...

most sensors have hot/dead pixels(WTF, is this even legal?)...

non-existent or rude support (especially with valid RMA requests)...

...the list goes on (and this only from my experiences).

From my perspective, BM specializes in fast to fail products.
I can't help but wonder if BM uses chips that failed QA for other vendors.

I also imagine that reviewer types get cherry picked models, and not whats on sale at B&H.

I consider BM pretty much a straight up hype & scam shop.

Once the return period for the purchase of a BM product expires, you are SOL if "anything" goes wrong.
They do not honor their warranty or even let you pay them to fix their products.

Got any facts to back that up? Or are you content with just saying crap that people can't verify?

I mean honestly why include a Gratical HD for the FS7 and not for the Mini?

Isn't it obvious? Because he was comparing to Blackmagics own EVF which is higher resolution. I looked through both at NAB, and I prefered the image of the Blackmagic one and it's half the price. So THAT is relevant because you won't get an option as good on the FS7 for cheaper. Simple.

Or how about the shoulder pad ? Sorry but the BM's looks just as uncomfortable as the original one for the FS7.

The hypocrisy is strong with you. On one hand you say "don't judge a product until you've tried it" and then you say "that LOOKS uncomfortable" without having ever tried it. LOL. Again, I tried the Blackmagic pad at NAB on the Mini and saw 4-5 people in front of me and after me also try it. We all seemed to say the same thing, not only was it very comfortable on the shoulder but we were shown all the mounting points on the bottom of the camera 4-5 in total I think) and how much range you could move it. Which could place it from basically under the lens to right to the back of the camera which was a ton. When I tried the FS7 it was at the back and the camera wanted to fall off the front of my shoulder. So if you wanted a balanced rig you would NEED the zacuto or another plate/pad. With the URSA Mini, you DON'T need another one and again theirs is cheaper than 3rd party options and I think better. So the comparison makes total sense to me.

1) it has taken them YEARS after first release to deliver it with regards to their original cameras.

Again, give some details here. Because for the last year their free firmware updates have gone BEYOND what they initially promised the cameras would do. What exactly took them years to deliver?

2) it has taken a heck of a lot of prodding on their endusers part to get them to follow through on their promises.

That's a ridiculous assumption. For all you know everything they've done was always part of their plans and it actually makes far more sense they have a more thought out road plan going forward that most user suggestions will ever provide.

Reliablity is not their strong point

You keep beating this drum, but what's it based on? How many cameras from them have you owned? Or are you basing it on forums, i.e the place where people go to complain or find help when they have problems? Because clearly that would be a poor way to get indication of not only the percentage of customers with issues, but you also have zero idea how much volume Blackmagic actually ship so again - no idea how many issues some customers may have versus others that have NONE and just go ahead and get work done and have no need to ever visit a forum.

even the original URSA are ergonomic nightmares either in terms of form or weight.

Sounds like again you don't own one or use one regularly because everyone I know who does, LOVES it. I've used one several times and think it's actually great on the shoulder with an EVF. I bet even better with their own EVF which the image looks better than most I've used.

Brilliant. Quote someone from REDUSER. LOL. The only forum that has more butt-hurt users than happy ones who are all trying to justify the price they spent on their cameras and are bitter that their work is still average when they thought their more expensive camera would bring in the work and make them better. Honestly man, everyone gets that you don't like Blackmagic. Your posts sound desperate now to try persuade people that Blackmagic isn't offering something as good as they think. Why are you so worried? If I were you I'd give up the far-reaching posts and do something more positive with your time.

99% not, but I will ask anyway, maybe I'll be extremely surprised ;) URSA and URSA mini are both not weatherproofed isn't it?

I see so people are only allowed to comment on cameras that their forum is specifically dedicated to?. Otherwise it should automatically be discounted? In that case you might as well only comment on Panasonic cameras here. Unlike yourself I am not a fanboy for BM. I use whatever camera I think is appropriate for a job. You just can't deal with the fact that someone else has tried BM cameras on numerous occasions and found them sorely lacking and has chosen to share about it. You banter around words like desperate and hypocrite. What on earth would I have to be desperate about ? I have absolutely no investment in whichever camera you chose to use. Frankly I don't care one way or another, honeybunch. However, it sounds to me like you very definitely have made a purchase which YOU have an emotional investment in defending.

As an ex-owner of a BM Production camera (an unfinished camera if there ever was one) and after having watched this merry go round several times as a chief moderator on another forum, I think I am certainly qualified to state this. And I am not alone, by a long shot.
So here's my opinion, the camera's from your favorite camera maker suck, because they have lousy QC, are frequently unfinished, and their customer support is atrocious. I saw this with their original cameras that had some serious audio issues and frankly did not even have substantive menus for the first year and I saw it again with the FPN, dead pixels and black hole issues on their 4K camera. On both cameras it has taken AGES to sort these things out. Other users would be best advised to wait before buying and to not pre-order. To give it some time once they are out in the wild and take all the BM hype and 100ft banner's with a HUGE grain of salt.

Whether it took years or not did they not still deliver? Also some of the features that they promised such as RAW on the pocket didn't take years only a few months so I dunno. Also if prodding works great I own a Sony A7s and Sony has done nothing to address the requests that users have made. So if takes years as you say that is fine with me because that beats NEVER or just coming out with version 2 and dumping version 1. And for reliability that is subjective I have had no problems whatsoever I am sorry you and others have. I can only speak to mine and others I actually know exeperiences with the cameras and they are happy with the camera and they have worked for me and them just fine.

Still waiting for the APS-C mode in the a7S to be assignable to one of the custom buttons, or to the quick menu.
Also for start/stop video recording on the custom buttons, which is not a personal need but actually a near-universal request from a7S users.

Agreed. I have one and that would be helpful.
However, this is a far cry from the Production Camera's numerous faults which never have been properly dealt with on so many levels.
Personally, I think I would hold out for the newer sensor for the mini if that camera ever hits my radar. By that time they will have ironed out some of the bugs with the camera itself and also have moved beyond what for my mind was a terrible implementation of that current 4K sensor.

From a purely marketing and forecasting perspective, I wonder if the folks at BlackMagic really understand the groundswell of enthusiasm the URSA mini is causing from potential buyers. I think demand could easily exceed supply. They aren't Apple after all with 10's of billions in cash reserves with which to play. I would have preferred to see built-in NDs on the cam as most of us would, but hey, the other specs make that apparent oversight pale in comparison.

If BMD truly hits their delivery mark this summer with the initial (overwhelming?) orders and the URSA mini lives up to expectations, they will get a lot of people like me to make the jump from Sony/Panny/Nikon to BMD. And this from a guy who owns no Canon or PL mount glass. It's all about the image and ease-of-post use. The BlackMagic team seems to understand this better than anyone.

On second thought, perhaps they are an Apple in the making.

This, I have sent emails as well but i don't think that will happen.
