BlackMagic - URSA Mini

Lowering your F stop to 1.0 or 1.8 may help keep your image bright, but it plays hell with the focus issues, so lowering F stop on cameras "terrible in low light" is not a substitute for what the A7S gives you--a bright picture that has the important stuff in focus.

When an F1.8 is Speed Boosted on a Blackmagic Pocket by means of the x0.58 Metabones Speed Booster, it becomes an F1.05 - this is equivalent to the depth of field at F3.0 (1.05 x 2.88 = 3.024) on a full-frame sensor. When shooting on a full-frame sensor, I like to be at around F4.0, and when on an APS-C sensor, I like to be around F2.8. Personally, I didn't get the x0.58 in order to achieve more shallow depth-of-field (I'm not very fond of very shallow depth-of-field), I got it mainly to make my 18-35 achieve a wider field-of-view.

now the run&gun people run to find a focus puller and possibly lots of gaffer's tape to mark the position for the actors , during the shoots of their cats in the living room . This biz is going to the right direction: absurd products for the style of having it. Then it looks good on the monitors while editing for 40 days: final destination? youtube. Paid work? nahhh. it's for fun and style.

Beautiful! 800 is a wonderful level to work at. Just a magnitude easier to light than the 400-odd ISO of the current 4K sensor.

In my experience with the prototypes so far, the 800 is similar or better than say the Pocket at 800. A big difference being if you're delivering 1080, then the noise shrinks down by a factor of around 4. So in that sense it's looking cleaner than the pocket to me so far.

Now the only things I'm wondering about are the distribution of DR above middle grey (is it 5 stops? 6? 7?)

About 6 stops over @800 right now. That could change. If you look at this pic from our website about the Cinema Camera, you'll see it shows 5 stops over for the Cinema/Pocket. So this sensor should add about 1 stop in the highlights, and another in the shadows to what you might be familiar with on the Pocket (the camera that had the most DR from us prior to this sensor).

and whether BM are continuing with their moire-prone anti-alaising filter stance?

I never really saw any complaints about moire with our 4K cameras? The new 4.6K sensor should resolve even more detail so be even less of a problem ?

Just saw this.... in my opinion, if it works as intended, BM made a C300 mk II killer even before that camera comes out. I really like what I see here.
Please guys, this time get your distribution in order :) I'm about to vandalise my wallet if can feel sure that it will be rolled out smoothly.

The BM 4K doesn't have bad moire, it's the 2.5K and the pocket that have those issues.

It's on the BM website.

Also, Hook, in case this helps recover your mood: your video looks A LOT better than the much more expensive short that Canon put together for the C300II.

Not happy to see the video i shot ripped from Vimeo/our website and reuploaded to Youtube. :(
Why so?

It's free publicity for the product, even without the attribution to the cinematographer.

In any case, I'd like to see a 4K version soon.

Hook. I had a few concerts I filmed a year ago ripped and used in a promotional video on YouTube by another company. I was able to get it pulled. Just shoot YouTube an e-mail, they'll sort it out.

It's really great that BMD has employess that are "one of us" posting on these boards. Same with CD and Mitch. I just want to ask if this statement means that there's no OLPF in the new camera (because it doesn't need one) and does that mean it won't have IR filtration built in?

The moire and having to worry about IR were the only image related complaints I had about the 2.5k camera.

OK, but I bet it is a moot point. This is a promo demo or, at least, presented like that. The more spread the better goal, I guess. It is not the first nor will be the last one to be reuploaded on Vimeo or Youtube to promote a camera for the sake of it. This should be seen as an achievement, not a handicap :-)

To speak frankly, to have it played from our own drive through our own player -- without mention able to be tweaked at our own CC testing and taste, fulfills better the purpose of promoting a product (isn't it what we're talking about, after all?) addressed to potential customers... or then, if I am wrong, can anyone enlighten me where am I missing the party over here, please?

Sorry mate :S didn't know that.... I'll find the Vimeo link and replace it in my post.

EDIT: Can't find it on Vimeo. Could you post it yourself? :)
: D I guess you're just seconding my ^ post above in a way or another. It is simply not available on Vimeo, only embedded on the manufacturer web page. That is, you need to be online to put your eyes on it.

In some other words, I believe your request speaks by itself and all this.

I thought it was a fantastic video by the way.

I was curious what the optics were? There was nice subtle diffusion/flaring throughout.

Blackmagic doesn't allow other sites to embed the vimeo link for their own reasons. But personally the vimeo compression is bad enough, to then be re-compressed again via youtube from a rip is something i'd rather not people see. That's more where i'm coming from.

Sage ~ i do like diffusion a lot and used a 4x4 Schneider Hollywood Blackmagic 1/4 for basically the whole video also, lenses were as Fahnon posted. I used Formatt Firecrest ND's throughout.

It was in excellent taste. Just what the 18-35 calls for. Is that your favorite diffusion?

It's not about publicity, it's about someone else claiming CaptainHook's work as their own and that isn't right.
I didn't check the link. If so, it is plain stupid and pure steal. Email them to remove it. And I'd suggest you can let us to download it from your own account, Hook. Ungraded would even rock, if possible :-)
