BlackMagic - URSA Mini

Kholi, Any recommendations for a quick release shoulder mount or heard of any 3rd party mounts on the horizon for the URSA? Wish the mini's shoulder mount was compatible with it.

I think SmallHD is actually going to do something with it. If enough people scream at BMD, we may be able to get them to adapt the Mini's shoulder setup/quick release for Big Ursa. That would be pretty great, as it's really affordable and felt like something I could live with as long as I owned the camera.

Which probably means that they developed their own internal spec and then looked to see what sensor on the market was the closest match.

In the Black Magic Design press release that went out Monday Grant Petty said:

"When we introduced our URSA high end digital film camera last year, it was designed to be user upgradable. The reason for this is we had secretly been working on a whole new generation of sensor technology that we wanted all URSA customers to have, without obsoleting the camera. The great news is the millions of dollars we have invested in this new sensor have turned out wonderfully. It’s exactly as we hoped, the new sensor is 4.6K resolution and it has an amazing 15 stops of dynamic range. We have been shooting with the new sensor and have posted a video on the URSA page of our web site if you want to check it out."

^ That doesn't mean they developed it in-house. I still think it's a Fairchild design, with the development process directed and funded by BM (this is what I want, take this money, make it happen).

There are of course ways to lower the initial investment for those on tighter budgets. opt for a starter zoom lens with a few fast primes, the slower atomos CFast cards, and power wise, it's annoying that they don't publish the draw, but you can get aftermarket bpu60 batteries and an adapter plate for a fraction of v mount

can anyone please guide me into using the bpu60 batteries with ursa mini (neatly)?

not only its much smaller, but its way lighter than vmount battery too. i would prefer this method if there is a way to attach it securely

many thanks

Probably the sensor already existed but its possible they worked with Fairchild in ordering a large batch tweaked to their specifications, perhaps they use their own bayer filter dyes and/or filter pack, and no doubt developing the right way to do sensor readout and processing and image processing from a new chip is no small task either, especially when using a sensor built for scientific applications and converting it for digital cinema use.

Plus, entered into an agreement that Fairchild can't market the same sensor to other manufacturers for a certain period (in ARRI's case, the "certain period" was probably closer to "never" with SMT (?)).

do you guys think this Sony's BPU battery adapter will work?

From my understanding BPU has about 4A output. (The battery can power the camera such as Fs7 while continuously provides 2A power out)

hawkwoods has hirose 4 pin out and 30W capacity (cant tell if its passthrough)

nebtek has XLR and passthrough. (no spec on Watt capacity)

if you know other solution that will make battery smaller/lighter, feel free to advise : )

many thanks

I guess the elephant in the room is the fact that NOTHING mentions ISO or the cameras lower light ability...not even by BH photos specs.

This is an obvious decision on BMD part to obscure this spec.

Im sensing a "gotcha" in the works.

I agree it leaves some wiggle room. It's an excerpt from carefully worded press release which is why i decided to let his words speak for him.

I doubt many people believe BMD designed a new sensor from the ground up. However it would be interesting if we eventually discover that their economy of scale has allowed them to get a custom offering with differentiating features. They are clearly serious about being a player and I'll bet more than one competitor has woken up this week with cold sweats.

I don't think anyone's expecting it to be a low light king. Even if it's only an 800 ISO camera that isn't bad but certainly not enough to satisfy natural light freaks like me; that's where an A7s or 5D raw b-cam comes in handy.

Base ISO is 800 capped at 1600.

Beautiful! 800 is a wonderful level to work at. Just a magnitude easier to light than the 400-odd ISO of the current 4K sensor.

Now the only things I'm wondering about are the distribution of DR above middle grey (is it 5 stops? 6? 7?) and whether BM are continuing with their moire-prone anti-alaising filter stance?

The people that haven't worked with Blackmagic cameras seem to always say that BM cameras are terrible in low-light (which is untrue). And when you Speed Boost them, they're even better (obviously).

I own the A7S and GH4, and I'll always choose my Blackmagic Pocket + x0.58 - Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 over the other two every chance I get. So much so that the A7S has been relegated to photography only, and the GH4 has been relegated to, well, nothing in a while. I guess eBay is the GH4's next most likely stop.

The 4K sensor in the BMC 4K and Ursa is terrible in low light compared to all similar modern cameras. That is the reason people are saying this. It appears that the 4.6K sensor improves upon this which is a welcome change.

LOL. You're speed boosting a 1.8 lens. First, how are you going to speed boost a PL mount or an EF mount. Come on man!

I specifically said; "And when you Speed Boost them, they're even better (obviously)." - hence, implying, I find them plenty good in low-light non-boosted too.

True. I should have stated that I was talking about the BMCC 2.5K and BMPCC. Sorry.
