Blackmagic Pocket 6K Pro with Internal ND Filters and EVF

It's a good day to be a black magic stan. If it had sony autofocus, I'd be there. But I guess that was true for me of the last one too

Well... they are getting closer to getting my $...
ND's ... check
tilting screen & easy add on VF... check...
newer, better CS...check
better battery.... ch...er, NP-F570...??? Does anyone else find this odd? I have lots of Sony NP-F970 batts, and now the NP-FZ100 batts for a7sIII and even the smaller NP-FW50's for other, older mirrorless... but I have none of these sitting around. I know, it's a small thing... but irritating none-the-less.

The 1500 nit tilting screen is really quite a big deal. With the NDs and the new evf, this looks like a big step-up (operationally) for this kind of DSLR-like form factor.

Yup, ordered immediately.

I have a C70 and canceled my FX6 order.

Everyone's needs are different, but I often do multi-cam music shoots that require upwards of 4+. The bm cams scale up amazingly well for these types of gigs with such low rental costs and the image is still much nicer (more interesting) to my eye than both the Canon and the Sony. The annoying thing has always been the amount of workarounds and rigging when I need a proper A cam for my doc style work. Thus the C70 (or previously pre-ordered FX6). The new BM camera is looking good because it takes care of all of those doc shoot needs (perhaps minus AF), AND becomes one more camera in my current multi-cam stable, all at an absurdly low price.

The only bummer, and I know how strongly you feel about this Mark, is that I wish it had a locking mount. With the P4k, you can use the metabones EF cine adaptor combined with a cage that has the metabones support. You get locked both at the camera and at the lens. Not perfect, but pretty damn secure. A still lens bayonet EF mount is still a bit of a bummer, especially with follow focus and/or just heavier lenses. It's nice to achieve rock solid connection even without rails.

It seems that the BM 570's are 50% more capacity than the fz100's while being 2/3 the price. Perhaps the tall and shallow form factor is ideal for maximizing capacity in this camera shape

Not just a tilt screen but 1500 knits. This negates a need for a monitor for most things and will be perfectly visible in bright sun. Internal ND's is awesome. For $2500 there is nothing like it on the market. Well done Blackmagic.

Would still prefer an FX6 for the E-ND, rolling shutter, full frame, high speeds, and more flexible mount. But this camera is only $2500 and the BRAW plus S35 sensor can really hold its own against anything on the market IMO.

Any word on what the battery run times will be now?

From the BMD site:

-----
Blackmagic Pocket Camera Battery Pro Grip
The optional battery grip holds two
NP‑F570 batteries so you can shoot for up to 3 hours!
-----

I guess that's 3 hours with two batts in the grip and the internal battery (and perhaps with the tilt screen not at max brightness :) )? But then, looks like you can also use external battery packs and recharge as you shoot... And the battery grip only costs $145. So that all seems acceptable I think...

I was expecting them to come out with replacements for the Micro cinema cameras, wonder if that will happen or if they've abandoned the Micro series.

But didnt they claim an hour on those too?

Yup. And it's not even close. They claim around an hour when no usb C device is connected and recording at 24fps. It's very rare that I use the CFast 2.0 card as I usually need the storage space and cost savings of recording to SSD's, so I don't have a clear sense in my mind of the difference between having the drive connected, but in real world usage, you are very lucky to approach to 40 minutes. 30 is more like it in my experience.

The official word from BM for the 4k:

Power Supply
1 x External 12V power supply.

External Power Input
1 x 2-pin locking connector.

Battery Type
Canon LP-E6.

Battery Life
Approximately 60 minutes
(recording at 24 fps without any external USB-C device connected)

Power
12V-20V

--------------------------------------

For the 6k:

Power Supply
1 x External 12V power supply.

External Power Input
1 x 2‑pin locking connector.

Battery Type
Canon LP-E6.

Battery Life
Approximately 45 minutes
(recording 6K RAW at 24 fps to CFast 2.0 with screen brightness at 50%)

Power
12V-20V.

-------------------------------------------------

and for the 6k pro:

Power Supply
1 x External 12V power supply.

External Power Input
1 x 2‑pin locking connector.

Battery Type
NP-F570

Battery Life
Approximately 60 minutes
(recording 6K RAW at 24 fps to CFast 2.0 with screen brightness at 50%)

Power
12V-20V.

--------------------------------------------

I'm guessing more like 35-40 minutes for real world usage at best. The grip will be useful for run and gun situations. Anything on sticks or with an easyrig for longer shoot days will of course go the usual pocket cam route of V-locks.

BTW, for the record, I'm a huge fan of just wearing a velcro battery case with a bunch of LP6 batteries on my belt when shooting B-roll handheld with a stabilized lens on the pocket cams. When you have the luxury of swapping batteries, it's nice to keep the rig small and minimal.

In any case, I'm not expecting much better battery life out of this cam. More like a bit better battery life with better features, some which (namely the 1500 nit monitor) will eat through the battery very quickly, as will high frame rates.

So basically same battery life as the 4K, less with the screen at full. That screen eats the juice!

BTw, I just noticed that the new camera is 2.78 LBS. That's not a very light camera anymore. Of course, if you can forego a monitor on top, which you should be able to do with a 1500 nit 5" monitor, that helps a lot.

The sony FX6 is under 2LBS for the body only, which is kind of amazing.
