Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Shuttle Video Recorder OR Atomos Ninja ?

AJA on an AF100 on a Steadicam is going to be more difficult, because you'll need a second battery system to power the AJA. It requires 12v power, so you're going to have to make room for the size and weight of a brick battery.

Yeah... hence my interest in something easier and lighter which may well double as a reference monitor (If i understand the Ninja's capabilities right).
otherwise the steadicam op is gonna look even more like a cyborg!

After reading the pro's and con's of the new Ninja I have a suggestion to Dave Shapton that may swing voters across to the Ninja. Apart of the the good work already done to get a product like the Ninja out on the market (well done Atomos) I think programmable feature like time lapse recording and over/under cranking would be features I would find hard to resist when deciding on which external recorder to buy. I would love to set up my video camera instgruct Ninja to take x frames on cue over say a day/night to capture natural events for time lapse editing. Any takes out there who might agree?

That's a good suggestion, Paul.

With the Ninja and Samurai, they share the same software, largely. This is what we call our AtomOS platform. The combination of having our own operating system, hardware and a touchscreen means that we have immense flexibility in the way we can use our recorders. We can change the controls, and we can change what the hardware and software do in many ways.

For example, we are going to be bringing focus assist features to our recorders at some point. Anything that is within the capability of the hardware we can do, given time and if there is a demand. Some things are outside of the capability of the hardware and will have to wait for new designs in the future. Time-lapse is within our capabilities, and we may well add this. Overcranking is more dependent on external factors. We can only record what is sent over the HDMI cable to the Ninja, and when most cameras are on overcrank mode, they don't send this increased framerate over the HDMI connetion, and nor would be be able to record it, because of the much higher data rate of 1080p60, for example. You need a different kind of architecture to do this, and such a system would be much more expensive.

By the way, you can get very good results by setting your camera to record an Interlaced signal - which the Ninja records as well - and then processing your footage externally to make each of the interlaced fields equal to a frame of video. This will give you 50% slow motion at the expense of vertical resolution - but, depending on your source material, it can still look very good. Note that your camera must be set to capture genuine 50 or 60 field-per-second images (ie sampling the image 50 times per second) and not 25 or 30 times in the case of 25p or 30p for this to work. I've tried this with the GH2 and have had brilliant slow-motion results.

not great for pulling focus though...but as a video tap type solution it works very well.

The Monitor on the Ninja is really intended as a confidence monitor and just as a means to see what you're recording; but we will be adding focus-assist to it anyway, just as we will to the Samurai, which has four times the resolution.

Is focus assist coming with the next firmware that deals with the clip names, timecode and playback? As well, any new news on Stripper?

cheers

Colin,

The focus assist functions are more associated with the Samurai, which has the higher resolution screen. They are a longer-term project and won't be available for a few months yet but are definitely on the roadmap. (That's not to say that they won't run on the Ninja - and if we do 1:1 pixel mapping that will be especially effective on the lower-resolution Ninja monitor).

Hi guys, I noticed that now it is available a

Ninja 2.0 for Component Video Output Kit

that make possible to record on Atomos AV-IN signal.

Does anyone tried i ?

I would like to know if this Atomos kit would work to connect and record any AV signal into a Ninja hard disk.
Thank you

This isn't an official Atomos accessory. There are some converters that will take a component analogue signal and convert it to HDMI. With these often very low cost devices, they don't always work with the Ninja, to it's a good idea to try before you buy.

Thank you for the info.

Could u please tell me what is going to happen if I connect a 60p camcorder to the Atomos ?
I understand that the Atomos can not record in 60p. but what is going to happen when a camcorder set to record in 60p gets connected to the Atomos ? Will the atomos be able to record in 60i anyway ?
Also, which is the longest time that the Atomos is capable to record using the longest lasing batteries possible ?

Thank u

If you connect a 60p camcorder to a Ninja, it will simply not recognize the input and will not lock to it. You certainly won't be able to record from it. 1080p60 is twice the data rate of 1080i60. You'd need a different type of device to record this, and it would be much more expensive because it would need more processing and more data bandwidth. It's not just Atomos products that behave like this; it's due to the laws of physics that can't simply double the data rate and expect things to work the same way.

Note that the Sony FX100 will output a 60p signal across it's HDMI connection by default, and you have to tell it to output 60i over HDMI if the Ninja is to record it, which it does very successfully once this has been set. And remember, this "60i" signal actually contains a progressive video image; it's just that each frame is split between two fields. Since the original frame was progressive one, when you put the two fields back together on a screen, you see progressive video.

With the Samurai, BTW, it has a single-link HD SDI input. This means that by definition it will not take a 60p input, because with SDI, a dual-link or 3G (as in 3 gigabytes) connection is needed.

BTW - the new Atomos Connect converters DO have a 3G SDI input; but we have made no comment on how we might use that facility yet.

ATOMOS Ninja 2.0 vs ATOMOS Ninja

ATOMOS Ninja 2.0 vs ATOMOS Ninja

I noticed that some stored discontinued the ATOMOS Ninja and they are selling the ATOMOS Ninja 2.0 Isn't the difference just in a downloadable firmware upgrade ?
Thank you
